You know, I was wondering, you know how you need to be gentle when you are handling a HDD that is on so you do not scratch the disks when it is writing, well how do laptops HDD work? Are they more reinforced?

Think they're more resistant since they're smaller (head is lighter so less G force) but I'm sure if you took a laptop thats on and droped it about a foot on the table it would probably reboot or freeze and possibly damage HDD.
Thats an experiment for.......
The mythbusters!

Many notebooks – ThinkPads and MacBooks, for example – have a sensor that can detect when the computer’s in free fall and then automatically stop the hard drive.Red Squirrel wrote: but I'm sure if you took a laptop thats on and droped it about a foot on the table it would probably reboot or freeze and possibly damage HDD.

Hmm thats pretty cool. So it will basically park the head before it hits.
In theory you could throw a hard drive against a brick wall and it should still work, they're quite solid when turned off. I would not try it though.

ThinkPads have another neat feature (that I’ve yet to test): a spill-resistant keyboard. I can’t imagine a scenario where my next notebook won’t be another ThinkPad.Lamez wrote: lol, wow laptops have some neat hidden features.
Edit: Hyphenated “spill-resistant.”

lets try this test....
put laptop in dishwasher while it is on, configure wireless and do a ping -t to the IP from another PC, see how long it lasts

I think the experiment would be more interesting if we stuck a Canadian in the dishwasher instead.

I guess we could stick a wifi receiver in his butt, then plug him in, and install win98se.

We shouldn’t be so mean to Red. We’d at least use Windows 2000.

Windows 2000 is by far the best OS microsoft has ever rolled out. XP is not too bad either its what I'm using now.
Vista is just retarded and defeats the purpose of getting a high end computer. If I'm going to spend 2 grand to build a high end quad core machine, why would I put vista on it and make it no faster then a single core machine with XP?

I hate vista, I love windows 32-bit, there is not a lot of good programs that run off just 64-bit for xp.

Could you make Vista a word that gets censored? It would make sense to do it.Red Squirrel wrote: Windows 2000 is by far the best OS microsoft has ever rolled out. XP is not too bad either its what I'm using now.

I think I’ve got the hang of rsync, and I’m almost ready to automate the process.
Plan:

Make a folder for each day on my external hard drive, e.g. 20070513 .

Make backups hourly in that folder. Files that have changed multiple times through the day will be suffixed with the hour (in 24-hour format), e.g. file.txt~CHRIS13 .

A daily script will delete the hourly backups from that day last week, leaving the freshest versions from that day.

Oldest daily folder will be deleted when there’s no more space.

Any issues?
Right now I’m copying my entire hard drive to the external one, so it’s taking a while, but rsync will just copy over modified files, so it shouldn’t take so long next time. Being a laptop, Charlie won’t be connected to the USB drive all the time, but I don’t think missing a few hours will make my backup too stale. The plans are not set in stone, because I’m not sure how much space each day will take up. (The drive I’m backing up is 65.5 GiB, and the external drive is 295.7 GiB.) I’m amazed that I’ve let myself go all these months without backing up.
I suppose my apartment could go up in flames, or maybe a power surge could destroy both Charlie and the USB drive. I could set up a file server at my parents’ house and back up remotely (and securely) over the Internet, but my data’s not that important.
I should be asleep.

Don't forget to install all of the porn/gambling-ad popup window spawning malware. Let's throw a Sub7 trojan horse in as well. All of that with 16MB RAM.Lamez wrote:Ya, but how would we ping him?Chris Vogel wrote: I think the experiment would be more interesting if we stuck a Canadian in the dishwasher instead.

I also want all the configuration files. Storage space is cheap enough these days, and rsync just takes a few seconds to synchronize the two drives.Lamez wrote: just backup things you need.

Little things that make me happy: Besides suspending after a certain period of idleness, my external hard drive will also suspend when Charlie suspends – and wake when she wakes, mounted and everything! I suppose this isn’t much of something to get excited about, but anyway.
