When I did an availability search I got these tld results:

It's better if you register the domain directly as then you can be classed as an individual and will be able to withhold your details from whois searches whereas if you get a company to register it for you (a mistake I have made many times) then you will be classed as a business which will mean all of your personal details will be available to others via whois searches and legally you won't be able to do anything about it (My whole house address including postcode comes up in one whois search on me- luckily I have since moved address).

Then you will have to point your domain name to your webspace- I'm not sure how this works in geocities though.

Yeah I did that mistake too. <_< Only found out months after I registered it too and could not remove it.

Oh, and make sure you REGISTRAR-LOCK it otherwise anyone can just take it from you without your permission. Well it does send a confirmation email, but trick is, you have to click the link in the email to CANCEL the transfer, rather then process it, so if you don't get the email for any reason, well the domain is the other persons'. A move ICANN'T did which is stupid.
