when I add an entry to my hosts file (e.g 127.0.0.1 doubleclick.net) to stop that particular thing loading on my computer I get a pop up asking me to log in which is very annoying as doubleclick.net is every where, what can i do to stop that pop-up from 127.0.0.1 from loading instead?

To me, sounds like you have some sort of remote service running.
Irregardless, try pointing the address to 0.0.0.0

If you have a http server on your network point it to that, that way it will also be faster (won't have to wait till it times out trying to find an invalid IP) Otherwise using 0.0.0.0 will work too and really I don't think the waiting and timeout is noticable anyway.
