Minneapolis (WCCO) A high school student went on a shooting spree Monday afternoon on the Red Lake Indian Reservation where he shot and killed nine people before turning the gun on himself officials said.

The shootings, the worst since the 1999 Columbine school shooting in Littleton, Colo., occurred at the Red Lake High School in the Red Lake Independent School District, approximately 240 miles north of Minneapolis.

Local Fire Director Roman Stately said that the suspect shot his grandfather and his grandfather’s wife before heading to the school and shooting people there.

Paul McCabe, an FBI special agent said ten people are confirmed dead, including four students, a female teacher, a male security officer, two more from the school and two others in the community.

McCabe said all the victims shot in the school were found in the same room. They believe one of the male students was the shooter.

The school was evacuated and locked down as a safety precaution. Students were sent to a drug rehabilitation building nearby.

The school’s Web site said the school has approximately 300 students.

Governor Pawlenty issued a statement to the victims’ families that said, "With profound sorrow, the First Lady and I extend our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the families who lost loved ones in this senseless tragedy. We ask Minnesotans to help comfort the families and friends of the victims who are suffering unimaginable pain by extending prayers and expressions of support."

The shooting is the worst school shooting since the Columbine shooting where two students shot and killed twelve student and a teacher and wounded 23 others before taking their own lives in April 1999.

This is the second school shooting in Minnesota in recent years. Two students were killed in a September 2003 shooting at Rocori High School in central Minnesota. Jason McLaughlin is awaiting trial in the case.

Mostly range, and damage. For example a sniper riffle, someone can sneak on top of the school and shoot like 20 people before he's found. With a knife you have to be right there and the victim has chance to defend.

But eliminating guns won't solve the problem, but only reduce it.

You can run into a classroom with a backyard bomb and take out 20 people faster than you could with a sniper rifle. Yes people can defend against a knife much easier, there is no doubt. But all that is necessary is a change in tactics.

I'm not sure banning guns would do any good. Granted law abiding individuals would surrender their guns but criminals wouldn't. Someone who really wanted one would still be able to get it.

Having said that grabbing a gun and walking into a school is one thing. Creating a bomb and then walking into a school is a very different thing.

If you really want to go nuts and kill people, is it really so different? Its a means to an end.
