this may be a given but after your burn your stuff to CD-R you delete the copy on the c drive to free up the space

there is an article red did that tells you how to move all the stuff on c drive to another new larger hard drive. you might want to read that in the article section of this site. 
and as the others said this is easy if your just wanting to move stuff you saved like freeware set up files or update setup files or photos or songs. you can just burn them as a data cdrom to a cdrom disk either a cdr which is non re writeable
or to a cdrw which will let you re write them again the next time you change them or you get more you could add more to the cdrw disk.
you will need a program that will do the data cdrom burning.
there is a free one i use that is called "CDburnerXp Pro" most the software that says pro is the type you have to buy. but not this one it is free. look on http://www.snapfiles.com in the freeware section for it.
that will work on all windows os's from windows 95 to windows xp, and it burns both data cd's and musical cd's as in ones that play in your car's cd player.
mp3 files you burn to music cd's are changed to wav files by most programs but this program will not change them it will only burn wav files to music cd's
if you want to put mp3's on to cd disks you need to burn them as a data file cdrom.
data file cdrom means that the cdrom will be used just like storing files on your computer.
but not as in draging and droping. that is another type of program to make cdroms do that. which is not suggested anybody do. because those types of programs will need to format the cdrom disk in order to let you drag and drop files to it. and when you do that the format takes up 250 mbs of the cdrom space
so you lose 1/3rd the space of the cdrom.
it is by far better and easier just to burn a cdrom disk in the data disk mode if you want to store files on them.
if you want to get a music cdrom to use in your car.
i suggest getting the free media player called " Jet Audio" as it will convert the mp3's or ogg files in to the needed wav file and allow you to set the volume of the songs on the cdrom all to the same volume.
and it will also write the names of the song or the artists to the cdrom if the cdrom burning drive you have supports something called "cd text"
if it does not then you can not burn cdtext.
if you in your looking around your computer find some thing that says compress hard drive for more space.
DO NOT DO THAT NEVER NEVER NEVER COMPRESS YOUR HARD DRIVE !! 
it will cause trouble and you will not get your files to work or some of them might be deleted and removed, that little program by microsoft was an nice idea back in the windows 3.1 days when the hard drives were only 100 mbs in storage size but it is not needed anymore. ms should really get it out of the system.
