Just curious has anyone ever messed around with that before? I never really thought of it till now, but the ability to turn on a computer that is physically off, is pretty cool! So I got this little tool where you put in the mac address and it sends out a magic packet that turns on the computer when it's off. This will be great for turning on the server or my parant's computer when it's turned off, when I'm too lazy to go downstairs. This will also be good for when I have a dedicated server, in case I accidentally shut it off or something.

You have to makesure the BIOS settings are enabled for a computer to be turned on through LAN.
Also if you have a PCI network card then some of them have a special wake on LAN cable that connects the card to the motherboard.
It shouldnt be a problem sending the packet to a MAC address if the computer you want to wake up is on your LAN. But if its through the internet then just the MAC address will not work.

Oh so that's what that cable is for, I've seen that come with some nics and wondered what it was about. Never had problems making it work without it though. Depends on the mobo maybe. The bios settings for WOL are usually off by default so to use it it's something to check. I would not recomend it on a PC that is directly online though.
