dedicated server

I will be switching over to a dedicated server sometimes this week. I'm sick of our host that keeps testing stuff on the server and thinking it's some kind of scientific test lab so we're moving. No more daily downtime.

I won't be leasing the server myself, it's one of our affiliates (http://ianag.com) that will be providing me hosting for about the same price as I'm paying, but main difference is that there is less sites on the server (only a few, instead of 700) and the server does not go down every 24 hours for "reboot" or "oops it did not work" issues. But this is a step closer to an action dedicated server since I'm sure I'll be able to get some decent traffic on there without problems so by the time I need my own server the site will make enough money for one.

I tested out the admin panel quickly and uploaded part of the site and it looks like it will work great. I just did not have time today to go further because of my cheap bed time because of my job.

I'll post more info on the move so you can expect the downtime, but the downtime will simply be a page saying we moved and showing the new IP address and instructions to change your host file as a temporarly fix.

Hey Red I was thinking about this yesterday for my photos to start my own page alas there is the problems of bandwith and storage, until I came across this I was thinking if 2-3 people were to go in to make a server and each have there own site on it for $20 a month it wouldnt be a bad deal.

Yeah but it's still way more expensive then what I pay now. (less then 10 per month)

Right now I'm uploading the site to the new server. There's a few minor problems regarding mysql but hopefully I can have it solved tonight and do the domain switch over too.

I use less then 10GB now, only a few times I went over, but I need more then that since I have major plans to expand and I'll be needing way more. lol I forget how much I'll be getting with my new host I think it will be 40GB. I'm uploading the files now. I go to that forum often and I never found it down, so this is why I'm quickly putting my trust in this. I still have not done stuff like email though, but I'm assuming all will go well with that... I hope.

The move will be delayed since there's a few problems including the possibility that the server does not even have mod_rewrite which makes the server useless for this site since most of the urls require mod_rewrite for search engine friendlyness which is not something I'm willing to give up.

I can't get a hold of the owner now for help so not sure what will happen from this point on. I was hoping to get this done by tonight. Then shut down tomorow to do a full update then switch over the domain.

Red maybe you shouldnt have gave your current host the tail until you learned that you site works over on the other server.

No to worry I'll be keeping my current host for at least a month before I cancel. I may even use it for *TcOughS* file storage or something. My mom canceled her credit card so when it's time to renew I'll just say to cancel the account.

Hmm I'll have to renew my domain at the same time though, I hope this won't affect the domain, I doubt it, since the registrar is a different company.

Right now I'm looking into this other server which has about 60 sites on it and a huge line capacity. 50GB of bandwith per month! Everything seems to be unlimited (databases etc). I sort of did not like the idea of hosting on a server that's not a "real" host, but I did some thinking and it's even better then a normal host. This current server has 700 people, and as they get more customers, they'll put more. The only thing, I don't really know the guy but someone that I know, knows him. A friend of a friend of mine, as they say.

The only tricky thing will be domain propatigation. I think the easiest thing will be to shut down the site on this server the minute I do the domain switch, that way I can assure that not both sites will be in use at once. I rather people have a few days of downtime (not like it's an unusual scene) then have them post and then realize the post is missing since they are on the new server.

Found a different server. Unlimited everything (database etc) 50GB of bandwith and 2GB of space. Plenty for this site for at least a few years I'm sure. Disk space may get more tight as time comes but I can always ask for more when the time comes. Bandwidth wise were set for a long time unless there's trastic growth more then I expect.

Simply put, it will beat this crappy host. No more going down every day and no more annoying sql problems. And first off, no more experiments on the server.

This means the site may be shut down for up to 3 days since I'll have to shut it down as soon as I transfer the domain to avoid having people post on 2 different servers which will confuse stuff. Basically I'll shut down the site, fetch updated copies of all databases then transfer them to the new server. Meanwhile I'll have an older copy of the site on the new server to test around.

The url for the site is http://lolerskates.com/~iceteks/ and the IP is 67.15.0.28

I'll configure the site to work on that url until the domain propatigates so once this is shut down you will be able to post right away at that url.
