I'm not sure how to do what you are trying, but it sounds as if it has to do with administrative rights. I think on XP, you have to be signed in as administrator to do networking. Someone else here may have some experience with networking 2 pcs. I've never had the need to do this.

Another problem may be with XP's built-in filesharing. You may need to insure that you have a user account with the same username and password on both machines, I know that's happened to me before... That may help get rid of the Permissions thing. Good Luck

Have you gone to settings>control>administative tools>computer management and looked around there? There has to be something to give you permission to change settings as the administrator. I think in XP Pro there is a power user function. I have XP Home and didn't see that option.

maybe your shares are "0711" and only letting someone with an account "read, write and exex.".. you not loggin in with a user/pass if leaving you with "1" which is only read acess.
This is my experience with it on linux, Im sure its diff on windows.

AFAIK you do not have to be connected to the net, just to the other machine. I'd try playing around with permissions, and PMing mandaren if I am correct.
