news.com article on the service pack

USB 2.0 and about 675 bug fixes this time! (weee!) If 2k still has this many bugs, I'd hate to see what XP has! Amoung the bug fixes though are 2 security fixes for windows media player 9, a buffer overflow exploit which can allow crackers to crash a system or run malicious code, the other a privacy theat which can allow someone to invoke an ActiveX control which can allow them to access library data.
I don't have WMP9, nor would I touch it with a 10ft pole, but I'm still getting the service pack for the other 673 bug fixes

Excellent. I just downloaded the Network Install file to add to my collection... I know far too many people that won't install Service Packs or use Windows Update, so I'll just install it myself on those machines when I see them again (I like to keep my systems up to date and secure.)

when anything touches the internet, and withouth your permission or knowlege of it, anything is possible.
remember that MS word had a security update ???
I think that was just the meta text that it stored in saved files, like the first 100 words you write, even after you delte them.

Hmm not sure, I wonder. We'd have to compare the file sizes and see. Being behind a router, I usually don't worry much about security anymore, but it does not mean I'm 100% secure though, as an insecure client connection can be pretty bad too. I think wmp should just not have internet ability, the only thing they use it for is to download codecs and that feature never works anyway. As soon as it says "downloading codec" when I open something, I close it before it's done, because I know it won't work. I never seen that feature work before. If I leave it, it will just say that it can't play it, and only the sound will work.wldkos wrote: say I were to install win 2k, would I have to install all 3 SP's? or just the last one?
So I block it with my firewall.

just the last one. The service packs are cumulative, so that means sp4 contains all the patches form sp1-3wldkos wrote: say I were to install win 2k, would I have to install all 3 SP's? or just the last one?

Reuters - June 27, 2003 - Windows 2000 SP4 Glitch Irritates Windows 2000 Users
by Hibbidy Dibbidy
Microsoft has indeed confirmed that its fourth service pack for Windows 2000 indeed contains a bug that has Windows 2000 users up in arms. A number of Windows 2000 users have flooded Microsoft's technical support complaining that running Windows Update for the first time after installing the service pack brings them to a Windows Bug-a-Boo purchasing page. Bug-a-Boo is the codename for Microsoft's next version of Windows after Longhorn, slated for a 2025 or what is commonly referred to as the Microsoft Two Year Development Cycle.
What has users frothing at the mouth is the fact that by being brought to the page, a user can not opt out of pre-purchasing Bug-a-Boo. It seems that this page uses an Active X control that search's the registry for your current Windows 2000 serial number and cross-references that with it's resellers database. The control then accesses the indexed serial number to see if Windows 2000 was purchased via credit card or corporate account. If purchased by credit card, that same credit card will then be charged. If the credit card is currently invalid, the Active X control then tunnels its way through the credit card companies database and issues a new account on the behalf of the original credit card owner. If Windows 2000 was purchased through a corporate account, that corporation is then billed at a rate of 2.5 times the original licenses.
Microsoft claims that this is just a routine bug that should be fixed, but do point to a Cancel Transaction button that will abort the automatic purchase. Unfortunately, a Microsoft developer did admit that the Cancel Transaction button currently implements the Proceed With Transaction button's code.
A Microsoft representative has been quoted as saying, "Awww.... come on! What's the big deal? You know you're gonna buy our crap anyway!"

Routine bug? Someone went to a lot of trouble to add that feature.
Don't know how they could legally open an account for someone and put a charge on it.

methinks it a joke. If Microsoft really did that they'd be in really deep poopie right now. Besides that would take a lot of effort and some really good hackers to pull off, both things I doubt microsoft would invest inWren wrote: Routine bug? Someone went to a lot of trouble to add that feature.

yeah it was a joke i wrote up out of boredom. i put it in quotes to make it look kinda real. nothing in there's true, except for maybe 20 year thing being dubbed the Microsoft Two Year Development Cycle.
