I got ADSL. I'd love to have a DS3!!! But I'm happy with ADSL, beats any other type of affordable residential connection. Cable is ok too, never tried it so I can't put it down.

Honk if you love Jesus, text if you want to meet Him!
Adsl is pretty much the same thing, it means asyncronis digital subscriber line as in upload not being the same speed as download, there's also SDSL which is upload and download being the same, I forget the other, just plain DSL is most likly ADSL, as it's just not advertised that way, that's what I figure anyway...

cable kicks butt when it works right. However right now I'm having trouble with packet loss with my current provider, and the butt-monkies at the cable company can't figure out what's wrong.

This is all new to me...just hope I can get it going. It is a self install package. Sales rep said just plug it in, is it that easy?
Yep, it's that easy. Plug the modem in the phone jack (an installer should of came and wired it up to a decoder or "pott splitter" I think they call it) and then you plug in an ethernet cable from the other jack of the modem into your computer. Oh, and it helps if you plug the modem in the power.
At least that's how mine was, there are different ones. I heard there's even USB modems...

its what i have 56 but not what i want. i just cant aford to buy any line like dsl or even t3 what is what i would really like to have t3 is what the internet backbones are i believe.
Wren you are good to go with the usb modem but remember dsl can shut down on you with out them telling you. and you might lose the connection so make sure they give you a perment number. also just keep the dial up modem in the computer and at the ready incase they do shut dsl off for maintence on ya.

DS3 is 28 DS1's, DS1 is the equivalent of T1, which is also the equivalent of a DE-4. I'm not sure if they are the same but with different names, but all I know is that I'd love one!
A DS1 has 24 chanels that are 64K, which makes it about 1.5Meg, so that times 28 is a fast connection!!!

Thanks, rovingcowboy...I will leave the dial-up modem in...they do have 20 hours of free dial-up service per month in case you need it. Guess they thought I would need it...I didn't know about the maintenance thing though.
I'm actually paying for a phone line for the pc, plus the ISP, so this will be a little cheaper for me.

I'd like to have FOTS! Fiber Optic Transport System. My own line. In my house. Oh yeah!!! I bet just the Cisco device to decode it probably cost more then any equipement I'd hook up to it.

if possible, you want a network card and dsl with rj45 connections.
the usb dsl modems have a higher processing overhead for your computer,
which translates into higher ping times when gaming.
i personally want VERY low ping times for a fragtastic time online while gaming!!!
