Fried Plantanes.
I was bored this morning so I grabbed soem plantanes at the ethnic foodmart on the first floor of my building and friends some up. Its on of my GF's favorite breakfasts and hell I like em quite a bit too. Don't remeber where I picked up how to cook em or anything.
What's everyone elses favorite odd food? Like something completely different than local cuisine or a unique locale thing.

Well, I do Maki, but I just hate people who are like "OH I LOVE SUSHI, I eat California Rolls!", and that's ALL they eat. California roles have almost 0 taste, and most places don't even use fresh ingredients for them (I am weary of supermarket sushi).
I like Sushi, raw eel and yellow fin tuna are my favorite. As far as Maki goes, I enjoy spicy tuna, spider rolls, and usually any places "house special". One of these places where I live has a special, it's eels and scallops with a spicy sea urchine roe sauce. It is truly amazing. My GF hates seafood, and just the smell of that role makes her want to throw up.

The only real sushi is sashimi on a chunk of rice. California rolls are lame. Make sure to put lots of wasabi under the fish. Maguro ftw. We have a chinese buffet place that has an awesome sushi bar. I pay $10 and eat $50 worth of sushi I'm sure they hate me there.

This is pretty much what I said haha. Maki is good, but fresh sashimi is the shit. There is an Asian buffet in my town and they have sushi and snow crab legs as part of the buffet dinner. The best $13 you could ever spend.dprantl wrote:The only real sushi is sashimi on a chunk of rice. California rolls are lame. Make sure to put lots of wasabi under the fish. Maguro ftw. Exchange beer with sake...then we can all dance around and dare each other to eat the wasabi ball in one shot. The one who can hold their sushi the most wins!

Yea I knew this thread would make me hungry 8)
I'd never heard about plantanas before this thread
I'm with d on this one. "Sushi" at sushi bars is so tasteless I have to slather pickled ginger and wasabi on them just to get any iota of taste sensation from them. Heck, the sushi at the supermarket tastes like pickled ginger glue
As for my weird eating habits; well, I'm really picky so I like to cook everything myself, I'm also in favor of organically grown produce and home kill meat.
I was vegetarian for 2 years and I never got used to lentils. I gave them a try, once or twice actually but they never grew on me.
Has anybody here heard of imitation meat? That stuff is creepy. It's soy protein with lots of spices and msg to make it taste of meat, the taste is pretty spot on and texture isn't so bad but it's just feels so weird eating it.

Well I didn't say Sushi was tasteless, just crap california rolse. I just like a soy/wasabi mix with my sashimi, but I also do like a variety of Maki rolls.Dollpartz wrote:Yea I knew this thread would make me hungry 8)

I live literally, 1 minute away from a sushi place but never actually ate at that one. Heard it has a really good all you can eat though.
Weirdest thing I ate I have no idea. Sushi for me isn't really weird as a lot of people eat it, and it's quite good. I did try black plum bubble tea though. I normally really like bubble tea, but that was not a good taste (Tasted like licking a Christmas tree ornament. Not that I ever did).

Neither did I, but it's hard to find good sushi bars. I see lots of prissy bitches around gulping down their sushi and it's basically dried up rice, a small strip of seaweed and barbeque fried chicken on top. lol. The best part is knowing they paid good money for it.Well I didn't say Sushi was tasteless, just crap california rolse. On another note, I like sniffing empty bottles of wasabi when I have a cold, it clears your nose right up

Green tea is weird to me. Why anybody would subject themselves to that flavor horror is beyond me.
Apparently it's meant to taste better if you pile in the sugar but isn't that kind of contradicting the fact that it's meant to be healthy? I'd rather just gulp down a bottle of that aloe vera juice, that stuff is good, and you know why? Because it's really grape juice.

I drink a lot of tea. My favorite by far is a spicy orange rind mixture. Add a little bit of honey and it is amazing. It's good anytime of the day and really has a lot of good flavors working together.

It depends on the type of green tea. Green tea takes a bit of skill to brew as you have to watch how long you steep it. Steep it too long and it quickly gets bitter. I had ginseng oolong the other day and it turned out okay. I still prefer dragon tears (jasmine pearls) though.Dollpartz wrote:Green tea is weird to me. Actually a AoV Gettogether would be kinda fun, maybe when I have my own house. Everyone brings chocolate covered nuts and I eat them.

I'll bring the Plantanes and Meade (I brew it myself, I've won some local awards on it). A little cinamon and butter and a light saute and I'm sure you guys are in for a treat.
As far as tea goes Death is correct you have to brew it right. Personally I brew it with some fresh orange rinds as well, gives it a nice citus zip and you get some vitamin C. The only REAL way to sweeten green tea is with honey. 1st honey is a natural tasting sugar and second honey is far healthier than processed sugar and breaks down in your system far easier and is much less likely to be converted into fat. But on top of that the key to keeping it healthy is to be moderate in the amont of sweetener.

Lapsang Souchong is the strongest tea I've ever tasted. It tastes like an over-powering cigar, and as you swallow it the inside of your cheeks stick to your teeth and your whole mouth is covered in some sort of foul slime.
Yes, I make it a little stronger than it is supposed to be by using multiple tea strainers, but damn is it good. I've had a few mugs, and I just can't get to sleep anymore.

Plantains you asshats. Wait until they're nice and brown and then cut them into thick chunks and deep fry them until golden. I eat them with an amazing Costa Rican sauce called Lizano.
I've had durian before...its kinda gross. I love ostrich steaks and I've had elk, but I find it WAY too smelly when it's cooking.
I want to try horse, dog, deep fried hamster, and cajun style squirrel. Yeah you heard me right...

Oh my God, durian! I can smell that stuff from a mile away and it STINKS. Now, rambutan is much better, as well as starfruit. I used to pick those in our back yard, along with the mangos and the 2-3 papayas that grew every year.jrhather wrote:Plantains you asshats.
