I think he means a resist count for the item to go in a little box at the bottom, i.e. 4/1/14/13/3, Resist Total: 35 (hopefully, I kinda rushed through the math), like he is saying it would make for deciding which peices of gear.
Although, I generally look for only a few things in armor, 17+lrc (on leather or mage armor), dual or tri high-resists (10+ in a resist category), and maybe a few other things. Works out usually for me, but I can see how the resist count would make it faster to sort through stuff.
Unless of course I have misinterpreted what he is asking for :-/.

I was thinking this was implying a median, as in: A Tunic comes with 17/32/5/26/10, instead of offering those resists, it would instead offer an average of 18 to all 5. Would still house all 5 resists, just less lines to read. Of course, this could backfire, like on those Wizard Hats, 0/5/9/5/5 would be a grand total of 4 (well, 4.8, but let's not round up).

Yeah like armor saying the total resist, a lot of shards just have it in light blue writing on the jewery and armor if there are more than 1 resists on it.
Just really helpful in saying , okay this piece has 23 resist, forget the mods, or this piece has 50 resist already, what are the mods lol

Not always, what if you find a super awesome deluxe nugget of joy that has 50/-25/10/2/-15, the total under that would say 22. Just another line added that wouldn't really get what you were after, Plasty.
