OMG what a nightmare
I hate how people think I'm the only person in this town that knows about computers.
So I got dragged in to install a printer for my uncle's computer... So I go to install it, not compatible with win2k... so we go to staples, buy a new printer, I get back, by that time its about 7:00pm, I still did not eat, I only went there straight from work. So I setup the printer, put the 4 toners in it, run a test copy (has a scanner too). All good, I start installing the driver, computer randomly reboots for no reason at all. Now it won't even boot. Now I'm at home and brought the damn thing with me (Ironicly I built it like 2 years ago, now I'm stuck supporting it ARG).
So now I have to backup all the files (Linux boot CDs FTW) then reformat the damn thing, then try to find all those drivers since of course the customer did not bother keeping the box which I said is very important to keep, with all the CDs and stuff.
Basically, there goes my weekend, and no server updates for another few days.
For once, I even had social plans this weekend, thats probably gone too.
Moral of story, if you have any kind of knowledge in something that not a lot of people know, keep it a secret.
So if you work in IT, just say you're an IT assistant, rather then an IT worker. IT assistant will sound more like your just the guy who changes the toners and refills the printer, rather then actually fix things.

Depending on the relative or friend, I charge them hourly. Keeps the calls to a minimum.

When I get my own house I want to setup an IVR phone system.
"Hello you have reached Ryan's residence. If you are a telemarketter, press 1 now, if you want technical support, press 1 now, if you want to talk to Ryan and do not qualify for the first two options, press 2 now."
If you press 1 it disconnects you and black lists the phone number for 48 hours.
The joy of bringing the pc home though is now I can do other stuff while his PC is being imaged... 1 hour remaining.

Yeah I'd either get a PBX (can maybe get a deal given I work for the phone company ) or see if I can actually make one with Linux. I think its actually possible, I assume you'd use two modems and have the main line go through.
I want to try and get this stupid PC restored tonight, and cross my fingers that tomorrow when I install the printer it does not crash again. Really sucks since I had plans this weekend.

I agree with Enkel. If you've got plans, fuck the computer. Go out and fucking do something.

OMG what a nightmare
This is just turning into a bigger and bigger nightmare.
So I put XP, and it took about 24 hours to transfer the files back, so I think the HDD is fucked. I keep hearing random TING sounds. So I downloaded the seagate tools, made floppy. Floppy can't boot... so I can't check that.
Now the whole PC is back to square one, and it wont boot at all, just stays at a black screen.
I want to throw this stupid thing out the window. Too bad theres like 5 feet of snow so it won't make a BANG sound. I'm sick and tired of people making me work on their stupid PCs that THEY screwed up themselves. For once, why don't THEY fix it themselves.
I need to find a business that does this full time, and I'm going to start outsourcing. I never believed in outsourcing stuff since the company I work for does it A LOT and it causes lot of issues, but sometimes you just have to do it.
I did not even get to see my weekend because of this.
