Bioshock is a new game coming out. Supposedly, it is really good. smooth graphics, good AI, etc.

It. Is. An. Atrocity.
It was recently announced that it is not being released in Europe, because it violates their laws.

You kill mutant 8-year old girls. they scream, they cry, they beg for mercy. you kill their tortured, genetically inhanced fathers. you kill regular adults, zombies from all the genetic modifications, driven mad from the place.

It is worse, by far, than any game I have seen so far. And you don't just have to kill them, oh no. you can set them on fire, and watch while they burn. you can impale them on spikes. you can electrify them, drown them, shoot them, anything you could possibly want.

And it is being regarded as a great, incredible game. A landmark in gaming technology.

Tell me, how is that fun? how is it fun to torture, and to kill, and to turn youself into a murderer. It looks like something used to brainwash cult members.

What has our culture come to? First came torture movies, then ultra-violent games, now this, this crime against the minds of our nation's children and teenagers. hell, adults are buying this monstrosity of a recreational activity.

Why?

Bioshock has been out for a little while now. And you don't have to torture little girls. I haven't actually played the game yet (though it looks interesting), but from what I've read, there something called Adam in the game which you can use to purchase upgrades. You get Adam by saving, or killing the little girls. I think you get more adam immediately if you kill them, but you get a bonus for every 3 girls you save. And there's a special weapon you can get only if you save all the girls.

The game, like many others before it, gives you a moral choice. You can be the hero, or you can be a villain, it's up to you. And I don't think you can really torture anyone per se though there is fire plasmids to play around with. And then there's the point of view. Are you murdering little girls or eradicating mutant abominations?

And here's the thing. It's a rated M game. Teenagers really shouldn't be playing it. They no doubt are, but that's the parents fault for not paying attention to such things.

So why do we like violent media? That's quite a sociological, perhaps even philosophical question. One that I really don't have time to delve into at work.

I don't buy it. Who told you that Bioshock is banned in Europe? I googled "bioshock banned in Europe" and not a single link on the first several pages said anything about it being banned there. I did, however, see plenty of links saying that Manhunt 2 was banned in the UK....

I've read the background of the games story. It seems to go hand in hand with it (killing the people).

I'm not a first-person shooter type of guy, but I heard Bioshock was really fun. You can shoot bees out of your hands. HEAR ME? BEES! COVER THINGS WITH BEES!

I find its better a game, then in real life. Unfortunately though theres idiots out there who will play a game then want to go do those things in real life. You'd think it would be the opposite, they'd want to stick to the game so they don't get caught.

What's sickening when seeing games/movies like this is that by today's standards its just like watching the news, since this stuff happens all the time.

I would not blame the games or movies for these things though, if anything, those games were inspired by real life stuff, not the other way around.

Well, it's not as if shooting rampages, "random" crime, and violent tendancies suddenly appeared when violent computer/video games did. The world has been a crappy place for a very long time. Hmmm, maybe it's because of violent cuneiform novels back in the day.

Yeah, violence has always been where ever there are people. Mind you where there is fear, desperation, and a vast economic divide, it's more likely. That and the media here in the US tends to exacerbate things. No better way to get ratings than to scare the crap out of someone.
