I feel Soooooo evil
My grandma refuses to use Mozilla she thinks it's what causes all her problems (because it has more popups.. those security things that only come once) but now I'm upgrading her system to win2k.. I soooo feel like deleting IE and putting mozilla (with an IE icon) and tell her win2k comes with mozilla now.
Should I do it?

I think it might be possible to use some special third party tools to get rid of IE, but I think he's talking more long the lines of removing the icon on the desktop [which requires a registry edit in itself].

Ah...I didn't know if something came out that I didn't know about...it's pretty much integrated into the OS.
But yeah, I say do it to her...tricking old people is fun.

Well delete all signs of it such as the desktop icon, program associations etc...
Though it's not possible to actually delete iexplore.exe... at least I don't think so.

also, you can remove ie, but you cant remove iexplore.exe, at least from what ive seen. one of my uni projects was to create something wichich actually turned almost identical to google desktop search, except i made it first in the process, i learned how ie works pretty well. iexplore.exe is shared around by heaps of thing by windows, but it is always run in different states (which call different libraries) there a lot of ie specific elements that can be removed. also, for example, you would think a ToolBand element would be compatible with both ie and windows explorer, but they are quiet different and require different code to run. all related data is stored in diffrerent areas too.
that sorta tells you that while ie and explorer appear to be the same and very intergrated, they look the same, and not as intergrated. you cant quiet remove it per se, but you can completeley lock it from being run or anything like that. depending on how much you lock out though, it will effect anything that uses ie activex elements, like msn, wmp, and tons of other stuff.
and yeah, you should reskin ur gandmas mozilla...

yeah, they use similar software at an internet cafe that i do work for, although its not quiet as in-depth as that. makes admin easy becasue you just switch different parts of ie and windows on and off. 98 and eariler (and maybe me; not sure) dont have the same level of intergration as 2000/xp, so can completley remove ie from them. but the others you just "switch off".

If you want your grandmother to use Mozilla, you should try assuring her that Mozilla is not the cause of her problems, Mozilla is more secure than IE, etc. You should not deceive her. If she doesn’t want to use Mozilla even after your assurance, don’t install it.

Yeah I told her all that but she still figures it's the problem. I think what happened is that it DID crash, it was just a one time thing, but now she thinks it's bad. lol
But IE was showing MSN really bad so I told her if it were mozilla the css would work better. And she wants MSN as her home page so every time she has to hit refresh a few times before it looks ok, she may realize that I was right that mozilla is better.

I'm sorry red. you shouldn't delete IE, but you should maybe instead install some activeX/vbs viruses on her computer that makes her computer unusable. when she asks why, tell your grandma, it's because she insists on using Internet Exploder.

Nope, you can crash IE with this code:
<input type crash>
Try it. (not all versions work with it though, for example the english version of win2k's IE will crash, but the french won't, and I think vise versa with xp one)
There's another one I forget, I think it's <script type=* or something.

yeah, ive ones like that in the past, but to run malicious code without any prompts or whatever from html... surely it would have to be something more.
ive also noticed that sp2 really changes a lot too, so it is suprising. i wrote these cool little bookmarks where the url was javascript:resizeTo(800,600); or whatever res you wanted, and it would resize the window for you (cool for res testing webpages), but they stopped working when i installed sp2. they work in firefox though

Yeah sp2 for xp actually has some decent security from what I hear, but it's all exploitable stuff, not to mention 90% of the people who install it end up formatting their computer the next day.

Does it even affect other versions of windows? It only says XP but since it's an IE thing I would assume it would affect win98 and 2k as well.
