legalize prostitution?
yes, i say. while it is not something i would care to partake in, i don't see why it's illegal. it is, as the saying goes, the oldest profession. if a woman wants to charge men for her, ahem, 'performance', then that is her business.

legalize prostitution?
From a Christian's point of view, absolutly not...
But from an economist's point of view (not that I actually am one, I just own a business). Maybe. It's an industry with lots of money, so if they legalize it, BUT that you need a special paid license, like you do for selling stuff, then they could also tax it, and some of the money would go towards paying Bush's dept or something. Doing performance could have a special tax to it, and also have the normal 8% labour tax, so think of the money the goverment would be doing.

Sure. Not something I would do, but I think people should have the right to do it.
How has this worked out in places like the Netherlands? I assume it’s working okay despite the fact that it’s only a matter of time before God wipes Amsterdam off the map.

Actually just thought of it now, another reason why they should not legalize it. it would spread aids and other MTS like crazy.

Sure. It's something that is going to exist regardless, and it would be a lot safer if legalized and properly regulated. The spreading of diseases really wouldn't be a problem if all prostitutes were required by law to be tested regularly and use the proper protection. Also the legalization would promote the formation of brothels where security and sanity measures could be instituted to keep their employees safe.

I'm thinking you were joking, maybe not. But just think for a second about a hooker out on the street, some John Doe drives up, "hey baby, how much for the night?" *Hooker takes out her pocket tax calculator* "Well, it's $200.00 for me, plus federal sales tax of $10.50, plus state sales tax of $3.33 so your total is..." LOL!But if they tax it, think of the money they can make.
I'm not even going to try and tell you how unrealistic that and the concept of prostitutes actually paying those taxes is, but man that's funny stuff.

Joking but I think it would still work. LOL They can have prostitution shops where you just walk in, pick a chick and do it, then you pay at the cash.

Why would a prostitute choose to work in a "shop" when that would undoubtedly include paying more gratuities, taxes, charges to use someone's "shop," when they can do it for free by walking around on the street?Joking but I think it would still work. Because it's much safer, both disease-wise and death-wise.shenbaw wrote: Why would a prostitute choose to work in a "shop" when that would undoubtedly include paying more gratuities, taxes, charges to use someone's "shop," when they can do it for free by walking around on the street?
Because they even have chances at benefits at some places.
Because wages are more consistant, depending on how the brothel works.
Because when prostitution is legal, prostitutes must register, since it's a business, and those who don't follow the rules are easier to spot and pick up.
Because it general it's less stressful than illegal prostitution.

Absolutly NOT! I think it's disgusting and gives us nice woman a bad name. Besides I don't want my children walking down the street and some Ho trying to sell themselves to the neighbor next door. Keep them off the streets!

i wouldn't want that, either.
i like nevada's system. they require that one works in a brothel, and has very strict health laws.

there isn't any victim here. personally, i think imposing your morals on other people is a crime in itself.

that is very true hence why their is freedom of speach, and other rights granted to us. why should we be limited due to a few people bad mistakes when the rest are responsible, if they are not then send them to jail.fragged one wrote: there isn't any victim here. personally, i think imposing your morals on other people is a crime in itself.

The whole "the government shouldn't legislate morality" thing is silly. Many laws exist to deter or prescribe punishment for acts of "immorality" or very poor ethics, and they aren't just vice laws. And it's difficult to say prostitution is a victimless crime.

just because they do exist, doesn't mean they should exist. i think that's a pretty weak argument.Stasi wrote: The whole "the government shouldn't legislate morality" thing is silly. the only victim in prostitution is a perceived victim, ie one who looks in from the outside with their own moral opinions. only that person gives the 'victim' status. ultimately, though, if that person is doing what they wish to be doing, and are not forced into what they're doing, then they aren't an objective victim.

The notion that they should exist simply because they do exist was not my point. My point was that as a society, we have found it necessary to put into law certain things to deter or penalize immoral or unethical behavior. I know you're a Libertarian and that Libertarians believe that all or most laws should be done away with in favor of private self-regulation and so on. This is where we disagree.fragged one wrote: just because they do exist, doesn't mean they should exist. i think that's a pretty weak argument.

I agree the masses are pretty stupid and need to be regulated but under that needs to be degrees of freedom. For prostitution in some places is legal in some forms I.E. state licenced brothels.
I think Fraggeds point is the crime is gonna happen and people who are looking to get laid and wind up in jail and help overcrowd our system even more, and when they do support the street hookers they aid in the drug problems most hookers have. Where if there was a safe place to go to get laid the workers that are not STD crack whores. it could reduce the problem of crime in certain areas.

First off, let me make clear that while I think prostitution is an undigified, self-demeaning "profession", I am of the opinion that it should be up any given locality whether or not to legally allow it.
That said, it seems more foolish to me to make something legal just because it will happen regardless of its legal standing than it does to attack the root of the problem. Again, laws exist to deter or allow the society to penalize those who break them. I can guarantee you that there are people who drive 50mph in 25mph zones. That doesn't justify legalizing or decriminalizing it.
Aside from that, sure, crimes related to prostitution would decrease if it were legalized in an area. However, an underground would still exist. And quite frankly, I don't know to what extent it would exist as I don't know of any heavily populated area where prostitution is legal here in the US.
