newer kernel, newer software, newer version of X. it uses Xorg now instead of XFree...a lot of tweaking. it is supposed to run faster now, as it uses 4k stacks instead of 8k, but i honestly haven't noticed.

it's newer and manages x much better. the only real difference you'll see, is that instead of editing the XFree86.config file, you'd edit the Xorg.conf file.

There were some differing opinions and lack of interest in Xfree, so they split, with xorg becoming the replacement for xfree. It is basically the same set up proceedure, just a new name.
