Stick to 2.x...
I am working on someone's PC so I decided to give them the latest. NEVER AGAIN!
It was just acting totally messed up such as refusing to show mail that I imported, it just acted as if it was working on something meaningless and giving me meaningless statuses like "determining which messages to index" and crap like that.
It also would not show the actual account folder, just the local one, then when I deleted and added the original account it showed up but refused to actually get mail, it just eats it instead and says "no messages on server". At random one might show up, but it will probably be in the wrong folder.
Oh and setting up accounts is apure nightmare. It tries to do everything for you then you have to stop it, it's just stupid the way they set that part up. Let the user chose the settings, don't assume that just because the email address ends with @example.com that the pop3 server is mail.example.com.

Just, don't, upgrade to it! 2.x is great as it is.
