Speaking of pinging---

If you ping yourself- 127.0.0.1 & it succeeds does that verify your network card is good?

Haha that is great!

As for the 127.0.0.1 thing, That IP still exists even if you have NO network card so it can't confirm that is it is working properly. I can confirm that your tcp stack and network kernel stuff is working properly, at least locally.

HHMMM--ok

The reason I asked is that, all of a sudden the other day, I got the"A network cable is unplugged" message from my little network icon.

I'm on DSL--NOTHING was unplugged.

I replaced the patch cable 3 times-uninstalled & reinstalled the network card in the device manager & even did a repair reinstall of Windows--nothing.

SO, I took the PC apart, took my modem out (no free pci ports)

Then I installed a card from a different PC--my network card is part of the motherboard.

I put it all back together & of course my NIC then worked perfectly

So, now I have to undo everything.

I have NO idea what caused this as putting in the other card had no effect on anything, unless there's a connection going loose on my motherboard,

Isn't there some way to test a NIC from the port or software that does it?

hmm that could be useful for pc support. So many people out there with no nic, and windows 98, so cant even use a usb drive to transfer stuff.

Sometimes the network cable unplugged message is a result of no IP, I think. It will show the message if theres no logical connection. Though usually it will say it has limited conectivity.

I'm going to put that on my wish list.

If you think a NIC is bad, you use the adapter in place of replacing the NIC to see if you can connect.

There's others, too, some with lights showing speed 10/100/1000.

If I don't uncheck the box in network properties, my nic ALWAYS shows limited connectivity--probably because it knows it's not connecting to a network, just the internet.

But the "unplugged" message I believe is hardware related, although I'm still Googling it.
