UBUTU Question

So I got my CDs with the program on it.

If I install this, do I run the setup for my printers in the normal way?

What about all the saved favorites from XP?

What about Adobe?

What about all my WORD docs?

What about Quicken?

WELL?? What about it?

Ubuntu will hopefully recognise it out of the box, but i think you still have to set it up at System→Administration→Printing . The installation CDs that came with the printer will almost certainly not work.

There is an article in the MozillaZine Knowledge Base describing how to import bookmarks/favourites into Firefox. (Firefox is Ubuntu’s default web browser.) You’ll need to save IE’s exported HTML file to a location accessible to both Windows and Ubuntu.

There is a Linux version of Adobe Reader, but the included Evince might be enough for you. You’ll be able to write PDFs with OpenOffice.org and a printer driver.

If you mean photo manipulation, the GIMP is included. It’s widely considered to be inferior to Photoshop, but it’s still pretty capable.

OpenOffice.org mostly supports DOC files. Microsoft keep the workings of their format a secret though, so don’t expect 100% compatibility.

GnuCash can supposedly import Quicken files, but i’ve never used it. It’s not included in the distribution, so you’ll have to install it yourself. (I promise you won’t need a compiler.)

Edit: Make sure that you back up important data and know what you’re doing. Ubuntu usually installs smoothly, but there’s always a chance that something will go wrong when setting up a dual-boot system.

Thanks for taking the time to break this down for me.

I can see that I'd have to run a dual-boot--I really didn't want to do that.

But I really want to get rid of Windows--I'm sick of it

I keep getting can't read memory errors continuously & it's not the memory--I tested it

The other day , I rebooted & when the desktop came up ALL the script was in WEB DINGS!--EVERYTHING

I had to run a repair install--again thats either the second or third this week

I'm running all these different spy-anti virus & keep getting crap in the system

Then I rebooted & could only get a desktop resolution of 4 bits & it only saw my C drive

I had to reinstall the monitor& graphics & the hard drive controllers.

I spend most of my time running maintenance programs instead of anything else.

Not being able to run in the printer software is going to be a problem, as it is an all in one scanner printer & it has different things it uses from the software.

DO I assume then that you have run UBUNTU then?

I have an all-in-one too (Epson Stylus CX3200). It works perfectly in Ubuntu without the Epson software.

If you’re having that much trouble, maybe you should back up the important stuff and do a complete reinstall of Windows. You might also consider upgrading to Windows 2000 or XP if you’re on 9x.

No I'm on XP pro --it's ridiculous

DIG THIS

I had to do ANOTHER repair install

Then after it came back to my desktop & I adjusted a few things I launched FireFox

ALL MY BOOKMARKS WERE GONE!

POOF!

AND there was no htm file any where

XP just decide--"HE don't need this"

Now I've got an extension for Firefox that backs it up automatically everyday.

So then, I had to do a backup reinstall from yesterday, so now I'm back to where I was before I did all my repairs---and the mem errors are back

Every time I view streaming video in Firefox it goes down

Or it just freezes

So now I got a slipstreaming program & I think I'm going to slipstream a XP SP3 & do a clean install

When I get time

THIS SUCKS Its no better then Win 98 as far as I'm concerned.

WELL

I just did ANOTHER repair reinstall & every time I watch a streaming vid I get firefox & inbeded media window memory errors.

finally, I made a wild guess & uninstalled the "all in one' codec pack

PROBLEM GONE!
