Virtual Memory MALFUNCTION
Virtual Memory MALFUNCTION
OK--NOW
XP all of a sudden refuses to hold the setting I give it for Virtual Memory,
If I reset it, it comes up correctly on the next reboot, but then when you go the the settings 'page' in says it's set for 0,
Then if I reboot, it might come up 0 or XP assigns it's own size, but the settings go back to 0.
I even ran a repair install---no change.
I even restricted the permissions for the registry to deny deleting or writing to the key--no change
I can't leave it at 0, even though I have a GIG of memory because I'll get memory read errors.
I researched this & found out you MUST have a pagefile (virtual memory) regardless of ram.
Any ideas??

sounds like you have a bug thats in your startup.ini Check your startup in msconfig.
Try this,
Disable ALL startup apps inside msconfig
if no luck,
then goto http://housecall.trendmicro.com,
run the complete scan, (do this step before you goto bed)
if no luck,
move all your precious files off of your system drive and reinstall windows xp.
just a suggestion, but,
you really should re-install windows on a box atleast every 6 months, i personally do it every 90 days. First time windows glitches on me, i reload it.
And of course there is always the OTHER alternative,
get away from microsoft all together and move over to bsd or linux.

Well-it appears as though I have fixed it.
I ran Trend & it found nothing.
I then downloaded Counter Spy & it found a bunch of crap--even though I was running
Webroot Spy Sweeper which is suppose to be the best--NOT.
Then I went to Kasperskys sight & it found 15 more things--so now I'm running Kaspersky too.
WINDOW'S SUCK!

well i am not sure about it but i dont seem to have those troubles everyone says.
i use winxp home sp2 and i use IE and i keep it updated and i use za and avg and spywear blaster and seveal clean up programs,
i also keep them up dated and i run the clean programs after every time i get off line and i unplug the phone line from the wall.
run avg once a day, update avg every time i get online it might not find any but i look anyways.
i have not reinstalled windows xp since the first of the year when
it crashed due to my stupidiy of having cracked ms software and going to the update site, it updated it sure enough it took the cracked ware out and messed up my computer so i had to reinstall. which is one way of doing updates. but i have not re installed my win 98 since 1999 it is still running and i use it daily all day as a music jukebox.
the winMe runs good yet too only it is not on most the time it is just a back up computer for the music mostly.
i have no troubles like needing to reformat windows at all.
i just have a warning in my computers to all that might find a way in.
but i don't get any in here so i must really be in stealth mode like grc sheilds up says.
which is fine with me.
my warning ?
i fight back and i fight back dirty and under handed.
you will regret doing anything to me,
