Cold start malfunction

If I power off the pc & it's off for like hours & then I power it up---

during the bootup, as it identifies my drives, one of 2 things happen--

Either it stops & says that one of my cd drives "is not ATAPI compatible"

Or, more lately, it id's all the drives-then stalls & gives me MBR ERROR2

If I just reset, the same thing happens.

If I power off then restart it it goes right thru the bootup & into Windows.

WHY DOES IT DO THIS??

almost sounds like your CMOS battery is dying. Are you getting checksum errors, or any issues having to do with the clock (loose time, etc)?

NO--& the battery is not that old anyway.

It's wierd though because whenever I run a program that like lists whats in yer PC-like Everest--it always says no battery on board & always sees 4 ram slots when I have 2.

But it is somehow power related but it won't clear on a reset--I must totally power off before it will boot normally.

This never happens on a hot reset or a hot power off & reboot, only if it's off for awhile.

Maybe this motherboard is starting to go.

I'd say power issue or perhaps motherboard. I'd go with trying to fix power first see if that helps, test it out with a different PSU and go from there, and hopefully it is the problem since thats the cheapest to replace.

If you Google that error, it seems several issues can cause it.

Yes I GOOGled it too-- but none of it fits exactly

I could do a FIXMBR from DOS but I hate to untill I actually can't boot.

Also sometimes it says my secondary hard drive is not installed.

Really wierd

This is a cheap PCChips motherboard anyway, but I don't want it to go now-can't afford it

Know what you mean...when you have older stuff, can't just replace one thing.

I should trade mine before it goes, about 3 years old now.

I was running a 250w case default psu on my main server for the longest time. it was overloaded by at least 100watts. took about a year to fry.

Well-now I did a FIXMBR from the Windows Repair Console from the CD

& I did a type of a repair reinstall

Now it went thru the boot -----------------------

to a black screen & sat there

However, I have the boot.ini set up to give me a choice to boot into the repair console or he operating system & it won't boot to the repair console

I get the error---CMDCONSBiosInfo.INI is missing

So, I'll have to take this out of the boot.ini file & then try to put it back in & see what happens
