I discovered something neat

Post by Red Squirrel »

At the camp we're redoing the cottage (no, they are redoing the cottage. :P) and I was helping to bring all the scrap wood by the fire to cut it up in smaller pieces and burn it. all sorts of stuff, normal wood, fake wood, floating floor, those squarish tile type things on ceilings etc... so lot of this have chemicals and once it catches it burns fast and hot (blue flames). It was like past mindnight and I wanted to finish up the wood so I was shoving so much in there I had quite the fire going. Every time I was facing the fire and the generator, the fire's heat was actually blocking the generator's sound when I past in that angle. So I thought that was kind of cool so I shared it. :D

Heat, or general temperature changes, affect sound a lot. Play a brass instrument in 70 degree weather and again in 85 degree weather and the pitch with change about 1/4-1/2 a step.

That also explains why farts in the winter sound different then in the summer. They sound clearer in the summer, and often result in an underwear change in hot conditions. Something about the electrons moving too fast when it's hot out. :D

What's cool is when you fart in -50C weather and you see steam.
