anyone familiar with volt meters?

I want to check how much watts I'm drawing from my UPS so I need to know the voltage (~120V) and amps.

so for the voltage, do I just shove the probes right in the socket? The meter has a limit of 600 volts but I still have a bad feeling about shoving stuff in the socket, especially 100$ stuff.

And for amps, I just put it in serrie with whatever I have plugged in right?

Ok, time to try it. I'll know once in for all what the mains is... some electriciens say 110, some say 120 etc... from there I'll be able to test the amperage usage of my server to see if it really is overloading the UPS. At least if I can find that out I can break down my problem with one of the machines spontaniously rebooting when the ups switches to battery.

Hehe well I chickened out and shoved them in there, sure enough nothing broke.

My house is 117 volts.

Should be a tad higher.
