I was looking through the battery section, since after working for telecom for a co-op last year I really got interested in the fact that you can probably run a whole house on batteries, which if taken care of and done properly, are very efficient. Any source of power can be used to charge them, wether it's a varying source such as wind and sun, or a more stable source such as water. Or you can combine many sources to keep them charged. While if you use the sources directly it's not stable enough as solar power only works at night and wind only works when there's wind. So using batteries to store it and let it out in a stable way is more efficient, and safe.

I'm probably going to build something like that for my house when I move. Right now my mom gets pissy if I spend a few hundred dollars here and there, so there's no way I'd experiment with this stuff now, and my parants would not allow me to have windmills all over the yard and stuff like that.

You should move into an apartment and put the windmills on the roof of the building. You'll quickly become the landlord's favorite

Actually when I was young I used to be more into this kind of stuff, and they thought I was building a bomb, when really I was building a radio or something like that... But when they approached me and wanted to talk about it I just started laughing.
