run the internet connection wizard first on his (host) computer, then on your (client) computer. then, make sure that the files that need to be shared are shared.

You might want to use ethernet though since firewire is not really meant for networking but for video transfer. So the bandwidth is great, but it could be one of the computers has trouble using it as network or something.

Nah, i set up a network between my desktop and my laptop, and when you snd 14 gigs to another computer, firewire is the way to go.
Fragged, i think i tried that multiple times. I try again and post the results.

Are they on the same workgroup? Sometimes it's silly things like that we forget... especially on large networks.

Oh is the xp firewall on? Since that tends to block netbios connections, well it blocks what it wants when it wants... it's a crappy firewall.

Had that happen many times since it's something overlooked. Since it's intermittent, that firewall only works when it feels like it.

Firewire is the way to go for networking.

Cool glad you fixed it. What is the speed you get with firewire anyway? I never even knew you could use that to network.

heheh, you should look into it since it's 400mbps
4x's the speed of ethernet. When my desktop and laptop were lanned, i sent 14 gigs in a half an hour to the laptop.

Nice did not know that. But does it have a long range? And can it go over ethernet cables? If yes it would be possible for me to switch. not know though, have to stop spending money college this sept. I still need to find a job.

wow, you really misinterpreted that. Firewire is a cable, ranging from 4 pins to 6 pins. You need a fire wire port on both machines, which is different from ethernet. It's used to digital video mainly, but i got the idea to try and network machines with them, works beautifully. I think firewire isn't used for networking as much, because the cable costs a decent amount, more than ethernet, know what i mean.

Yeah but I'm wondering if they sell adapters so it can go through ethernet. since if I decide to switch over I don't want to start knocking walls down again. But I'll probably stick with ethernet. If I upgrade I'll go gigabit, and that way 10/100 equipment is still compatible. And I assume a firewire router is quite pricy.

Why would you take something that runs at 400mbps and bottleneck it with ethernet? That doesn't make sense.
I also know nothing about networking with firewire as compared to ethernet, im sure there are some problems with firewire, but for a small LAN, the babys perfect.

No I meant to just use the ethernet cables to run wirewire, since I think there's enough coper pairs in an ethernet cable, so the interface/encoding would not have to change, just the wireing. Would make it easy to convert an ethernet network to firewire since you don't have to rewire the whole building. fiber, then that's a different story, you can't send light signals on an electric interface.
The only issue since ethernet cables are thin wires, maybe it would in fact slow down firewire interface, not sure. I never used anything firewire before so I don't know much about it. I have a firewire port on my PC though, I just never had anything to plug into it.

Red, your dillusional ideas scare me sometimes. That would never make sense in a production or any type situation to with wires like that. Just stick with ethernet and gigabit ethernet and you'll be fine. Firewire is made for digital video mostly. Im sure you could lan using USB as well, but it's much slower than firewire.

If I ever upgrade though I'll probably go gigabit. It's actually not that expensive now. I could probably upgrade the network for under $1000. Something I'll think about when I have my own house. (heck there will be as many ethernet jacks as power sockets)
