Bush In Ireland For US-EU talks

Post by Raptomex »

President George W Bush has arrived in the Irish Republic to hold talks on Saturday with European Union leaders.
A huge security operation is in place for his visit, with thousands of police and soldiers, 700 US security personnel and four naval ships being deployed.

The summit will aim to stress accord between the US and Europe despite broad differences over the Iraq war and the Middle East peace process.

Several thousand anti-war demonstrators were kept at bay at Shannon airport.

Ahead of Mr Bush's arrival, Irish police arrested three protesters on a boat in the River Shannon estuary inside the exclusion zone set up around the airport.

The BBC's James Helm in Dublin says the security measures in the area have angered some locals.

In the past, anti-war protesters have targeted Shannon airport, used as a refuelling stop for American military aircraft.

Mr Bush, who is making his first official visit to the Irish Republic, went immediately to the summit venue, the nearby Dromoland Castle, to spend the night there before holding three hours of talks with EU leaders on Saturday.

After these talks, he leaves for a Nato summit in Turkey.

I hope the US really works with the EU, great partnerships and discoveries can happen when resources like these two work together.

Bit of an exageration there. There wasnt that many there and there was some small protests in towns across the country. The big protests are supposed to be today. Though support for the anti war movement is dwindling.

A crazy woman got onto the ramp and hit and broke a US planes nose with a hammer.

Agreed. The EU can knock some sense into Bush.

If Bush stays in power, I doubt any real partnership will happen between the two.
