Question about slayer books and instruments

I have 2 quick questions about these items.

1. Do slayer spell books have to be equipped/held to get their bonus damage?

2. How do the slayer instruments work? What do they exactly do when used?

Yes books have to be equipped, and they only work for spells.

Slayer instruments increase your chance to bard creatures. Useful for paragons. a demon slayer instrument will greatly increase your chance to bard a paragon balron, for example. With regular instrument, it will be hard.

Instruments: Exceptional gives a 5% chance and slayers give 10% more chance to bard your target. Haven't checked the code, but that's what it's supposed to be according to stratics.

Likewise, using the opposite slayer on a monster will result in even crappier barding chances.
