DLNA is pretty cool

My first time venturing into the world of streaming given I only got a TV recently, and back at my parents our most modern TV was a 32" CRT.

Basically the way it works is you setup a DLNA server and modern TVs that support it will pick it up off the network and you can browse shared media and stuff. My particular server (MediaTomb) will transcode the video so the TV will support most files.

The only down side so far is you can't rewind or fastforward. I eventually want to setup an HTPC so I can gain more functionality, but this will do for now and it costs nothing except for the cabling to run the cat6 to my TV. I ran 4 of em for future devices.

I don't run directly to the TV. I have it setup to transcode/stream to the ps3

Basically I'm running through the router on Lan so no additional hook ups needed. Can access all shared files on my PC via the ps3/TV so all media files work not only with fastforward/rewind, etc but can bring up a menu that shows single frames so you can search by seconds or minutes. Of course I'm not running a dedicated sever though

Must be nice lol

Yeah I was reading the PS3 actually has good support for it. in fact the first tool I tried was actually made for the PS3 but it did not work with my TV, at least I never figured out how.

Eventually I want to setup an actual box to act as HTPC and put a media center type OS on it, as that will give me basically full capabilities based on whatever OS I decide to put on it.

Just finished watching a movie with my current setup, and no issues at all. The first one the audio was out of sync though, but it may have been something to do with the actual video file.

Nice to have a setup? Sure beats the hell out of cable and rivals if not beats netflix and video on demand. Just gotta get a season or 2 of your favorite TV shows and your good to go.
