dial up

okay when the modem dials up and says checking name and password.

then post's an error alert 691 that says the server does not know the name
or password.

and it is the same one used to dial up 3 hours before, what is going on.

it has been this way for several days now.

making new connect did not work,

installing the isp's dial up software let the computer dial the isps computers

so the modem is working.

but nomatter how we try to dial up the net with any of the connections we made

it gives us the server don't know you error.

how can we fix this and is it something on the computer or on the server.?

Dialup? Isn't that what they use to connect to legacy terminal systems?

thanks for the reply but its on moms computer that is all of a sudden not working?

i need to know what might have caused it so i can find the way to fix it.
or if anyone knows how to fix it that would be great.

i just had a thought though would this be another winsox error.

Well I remember having dialup way back in the day, it would often randomly screw up like that. I'd try to maybe delete the connection and redo it, also make sure flow control is off, think I remember that causing issues. But best bet is contacting the ISP if you can't fix it, they'll know which settings should be on/off.

yep i've already done that. and i did what they said to do.

no help. thats why i am just a little more then upset. the computer worked 3 hours prior to this mess up just not sure what is going on.?

unless it is the free fall fair. the town of almost 50,000 swells up to 100,000 so there might be more computers then the 4 servers can handle. but they all can't be on at the same time.?

Your password files are corrupted.

Search for .pwl--delete them all -reboot --then reenter your password info & save it.

Done.

don't think that's a client side error unless you have a sticky windows key.

First contact the ISP and make sure the hub isnt full.
second while you have them on the phone triple check the login info.
third remove and reseat the modem PCI card.

If none of that works the idunno. Why havnt you talked tour mom into broadbanb anyway?

but broadband.?

she still use's the rotory dial phone.

she wont' change.

why the only way she got off the party line is because the phone
company forced her to since no one else in town wanted a partyline
and they said they were going to put in a new line to the house that
was not able be a partyline.

to which mom said i'm not paying anymore then the party line price.

to which they said its cheaper then a partyline because every one has
this line style now. so is the push button pones because we have to keep
old outdated servers running to allow the rotory phones to work.

mom said you got the party line out the phone stays, touch it and you'll
be looking for your fingers.

so that is why she don't have broadband.

it costs too much...

lol party line? Isin't this like from the Graham Bell days when phones first came out? Like as in, a shared phone line that people can listen on your conversations?

AHHAHA--You're right

Try these 2 things:

Bring up your dialup properties & DELETE the password/user name--leave the boxes blank--save it & reboot. This should clear out the registry or where ever they are stored.

Then reenter them.

Stop Password Expiration
After you have run Windows XP for a while, you may receive this message when you log on: "Your password will expire in 14 days.....".
By default, Windows XP is set up with passwords which will expire after 42 days. 14 days in advance, Windows will start warning you of this fact. If you do not want your passwords to expire:

1. Go to Start > Run and in the Open: box type control userpasswords2
2. Select the Advanced tab in the User Accounts window
3. Press the Advanced button below the Advanced user management header
4. Select Users in the Local Users and Groups
5. In the right pane, right-click the user name for which you want to change the setting, and select Properties
6. On the General tab, check Password never expires
7. Click Apply and OK (all the way out)
