I’ve officially moved to Ubuntu! The installation went flawlessly, as did everything else. I even installed some applications! It was all point-and-click, but teTeX required a bit of geekiness. (Not that normal folks would install a TeX distribution anyway.) I already used Firefox, Thunderbird, LaTeX, The GIMP, OpenOffice.org, etc in Windows, so i felt at home right from the start.
This is something i’ve wanted to do for a long time, but lack of hard-drive space and time got in my way. I think i’m going to be very happy with Ubuntu. Everything just works—even the volume buttons on my keyboard! (Okay, so maybe my microphone doesn’t work.)

Is this better then say--Red Hat?
That's the problem, there's so many Linux versionss--which do you choose??
I should buy/learn MAC (apple)
Theres SUCH a demand for MAC support--no one knows how to use it

I’m really in no position to say, but what brought me to Ubuntu was its emphasis on usability and free (libre) software. I was actually going to go with FreeBSD, but it looks like too much work. (I used to live for that, but not anymore.)richardj wrote: KOOL

I guess you’d be okay with any of the popular ones, but i don’t know much about the different distributions. Many have “live CDs” that can be booted from the CD without installation. As a matter of fact, the Ubuntu installation CD, which can also be mailed to you free of charge, is a live CD. You actually install Ubuntu to your hard drive within an instance of Ubuntu already running from the CD.richardj wrote: That's the problem, there's so many Linux versionss--which do you choose??

Well, something had to spoil the experience, didn’t it? My X server refused to start after Ubuntu updated xserver-xorg-core to version 1.1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3. There are multiple threads (1, 2, 3) about this nasty update on the Ubuntu Forums. (The site seems to be having problems.)
Unfortunately, i didn’t find those threads for two hours. I have such a headache. (But there is a silver lining! I now know a lot more about the command line.)
I’ll definitely delay my updates and check the Ubuntu Forums before i update anything for now on. Hopefully this isn’t a common occurrence. Using apt-get from the command line to undue broken updates certainly does not aid usability.

I've been thinking on and off of switching to a linux desktop. But I'm so used to windows evironement with windows as desktop and linux as server back end. Well at work its 95% windows for servers but servers are a bit different, you dont need to support as many apps since they do a specialized set of jobs, so the back end usability (gui vs text) does not matter. But linux GUI is half decent, the issue I have mostly is program installations. ./configure make make install + a couple week of research on why its not working, vs next next next done.

I’ve heard about it, but i've never looked more into it. I’ll be sure to look around the site.manadren wrote:Ever look at PC-BSD?Tak wrote: I was actually going to go with FreeBSD, but it looks like too much work. (I used to live for that, but not anymore.)
Ubuntu asked me to update xserver-xorg-core to version 1.1.0.2-0ubuntu10.4 this morning. I installed it after multiple members of the Ubuntu Forum said it was okay, and thankfully everything did update smoothly.
I’m geeky enough use a command line and roll back the changes, but what about the average Jos Bleau? I wonder how many people gave up on Linux after their Ubuntu installation completely died. (Yes, Jos Bleau considers it completely dead when he only sees a command line.)
On a different note, did you know there’s an Ubuntu Christian Edition?

LOL that is great. Perfect for church computers I guess. hehe.
Hmm I wonder if typing man followed by a verse or book of the bible brings up a man page on that passage. That would be great.
