Finally upgraded to XP

Post by Red Squirrel »

I want to go to a lan party, but all the games I try to play on win2k simply wont run, or run very badly. So at first I was going to dual boot, or do it in VMware, then decided, I should bite the bullet and just upgrade, so I did. Its still a dual boot, but I'll end up deleting win2k. But to be safe I'll probably keep it since the boot loader is on that install... but its the same partition so it should not really matter since the ntloader is on the root of C: but for now win2k is staying. :P

Only thing I noticed, XP is not as good for power multitasking. Ex: installing software + booting up a VM + surfing the internet + opening a CD folder, does not seem to go very well. But guess I'll get used to it, hopefully. Individual tasks seem about as fast as win2k. So far all the stuff I use works in XP, including my hardware. (was my worse fear, that my sound card, or nic, for example, does not work).

I also disabled the fisher price theme and a bunch of uneeded services, and did some general optimizing. Still got tons left to do, and most importantly, I still need to install Ultima Online.

Where do you get all these Opperating Systems from--you can't be buying them

You'd be broke

BLACK VIPER use to have an XP site that was the bomb--but he went away.

His configurations for xp can be found HERE the only place I know off.

You use to be able to download .reg files from his site with these in them

So you could go to gaming mode by just clicking on a reg file.

I still have a couple of these somewhere

They saved me a couple of times when the services got screwed up-I'd just click XP safe default.reg & reboot. :yo:

I officially deleted my win2k install now, no more dual boot. funny thing is, I never even booted in my win2k install since I installed XP. I had mostly done it as precautionary measure anyway, like in case some of my hardware does not work in xp.

Yeah I'm using pro, no activation crap that way. :P As for WGA, I'll probably just setup a wsus server and solve that issue. ;)

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM------------

You still have to activate Pro--unless you've got a "corporate" version.

What would that wsus :grade11math: server do for you?

The big differance betweem home & pro is the networking & encryption.

Yeah it's corporate. :D

Wsus will manage updates centrally and as far as I know, bypasses WGA.

WELL-- I don't know what that wsus is-BUT-

you will still be able to get security & critical updates even if not genuine.
