Just got finished stuffing ourselves...ribs, pork loin with homemade barbeque sauce, home fries, cole slaw, and crossants or whatever you call those things. :grade11math: Good thing I didn't make dessert, would have had to crawl to the pc!

I had to work today. Good thing about working on the 4th of July though - nobody - was there and nothing happened. I'm getting paid, holiday pay as well, for about 2hrs work and 6 hours of dedicated loafing. Not the worst thing that could happen.

SOUNDS GOOD!

What do you do on your job--when you do do something--that is.

Monitoring basically - applications, servers, backups. I make sure everything is running smoothly in the datacenter and call the appropriate people when things break. Also act as the "hands and feet" when the admins aren't around and they need someone physically at the box.

Not the most glamorous job, but I get to work with some cool stuff, and it takes a bit of know-how to filter out the false alarms. And not a bad place to be if you want to sneak your way on to the admin team.

Sounds interesting, reminds me of when I was doing a co-op at a telco. They had this scada system where all the alarms came in, and I could even fill remote gas tanks remotely when they would run low, for remote sites in the middle of nowhere.

Then there was the alarms like "T3 down" and I'd say "this aint good" with "dont worry we ignore that one all the time" as a reply.

I'm not certified, and I work with all the servers and stuff. Heck, I racked a server a few days ago, configured raid and installed win2k3 and ESX management software, to go with the ESX server that I also setted up. A piece of paper or not does not matter on if you can do something.

HERE it does.

You won't even be interviewed for the lowliest IT position unless you are A+ certified. :banghead:

OR failing that, you'd have to have 9,000 years of expierience--which you won't get because your not certified.

 I ran into a fair about of that when I started. Luckily things have gotten a lot better since then. When I started we probably ignored 90% of the backup failures because they were "known issues". But the past couple of months they've been cracking down and actually -fixing- the problems.
SO are you--like --Microsoft or Cisco certfied?

Well I am A+ certified, and I hold a handful of other certs that don't really mean anything, but not Microsoft or Cisco. I'd say it was a matter luck, training, a handful of experience, and a selective memory :P Particularly, I'd say it was the experience that got me the job. Mind you the "experience" was a crappy 4 month app deployment for a contractor in Atlanta, but you can always pass over the fact that you had a step-by-step manual that a frickin monkey could follow and focus on the technical details on your resume and in the interview.

Still what you said about having that piece of paper, or a load of experience is pretty true. Depending on the joblocationcompany. If it's a position where they are getting tons of resumes you can be sure that before anyone even reads your resume, they are just going to do a search for a few keywords like "A+ Certified"

Yeah-Well the problem is that normally the interviewer doesn't know jack--plus they've hired people in the past who said--OH YEAH I can do this & that--and it turns out they don't know jack either----

SO-when they demand a cert---they at least know that the person has been tech tested somewhere by someone & he knows Something.

Like me--my career was in Telecom--I learned everything about PC's on my own.

I couldn't get hired on a help desk, which is sad as I need a job
LOL

Here's an example:

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a Technician seeking to supplement their income or work fulltime. Once you have returned all required forms you will receive the contact information to call our dispatcher line, making you eligible for IMMEDIATE service calls.
