That if you use the illegal IPB software on a public site you plan to show everyone and their brother, you will probably get caught.

Nope unless you want to pay the crazy expensive price tag it has to it, but I would say just use phpbb. Not as advanced but IPB2 is not worth paying for, it's also a PIA to mod it and skin it. That's why you see so many of them using default skin.

Yes, with so many communities out there, the last thing people want is forums.

You could always wait until the release of SquirrelBBS. It's free.

Meh... its ok i really dont need a forum that much it just fits in with my site. Speking of my site its coming along great! im almost done, I just need to find out how to make a login thingy and the ability for other people to upload there own pics skins and other programs etc...

hey Mikwiththestick,

i just seen your posts about the IPB , i just completly installed one on my webserver, its a little complicated i have to admit...but its completly possible to do it free. First off ill give you the example for my sittuation, youll most likely be able to compare...well i got my ipb (full version) from a torrent site. So well once u have a webserver set up...for example Apache, you just have to make sure you have the MYSQL database server, and the administrative tools, then you set up the PHP of course, and you configure the apache's config file...once all that is done, you should be able to go threw the install steps of the IPB they make u go threw...but ull need a mysql database already made for the tables to be able to be created by the install page. And well thats about it. With all that done, you should have a site + a forum working. I did all that , and i have a apache server, and ipb running on a free domain.

You won't be putting that public are you? since unlike software you run on your local machine, a pirated message board is very easy to detect, so to avoid loosing all your stuff later on, I would stick with a free one like phpbb. I'm not really sure what their policy is on piracy but I would assume they threat you until you close it down. Mind you, you can always run a forum converter script in that event.

my father works with the government (the type that handles hackers and warez) and doing that is much more iligal then useing that free version of php boards (I never seen that post) because he tells me to report anything illigal.

You're right, running an illegal copy of ipb on a server accessible to the public is nothing like warez or hacking. You see with hacking (though i think you mean cracking) you can cover your tracks and with warez once you download it nobody knows you have it unless they have physical access to your machine.

What you're considering doing is similar to downloading music off the 'net and then setting up a radio station using that music. In effect you're broadcasting your illegal activity.

As long as you know what you're doing.

Seems kind of strange given the quality of some of the truly free and actually legal alternatives.
