How did I end up here? Gmail

Post by Anonymous »

Hi.
put this post wherever it belongs. I'm building my first computer and looking towards making some changes. One of them being changing my email service. My connection here in Mexico is Prodigy and in Spanish. I googled for an access invite to Gmail and found a link to a portion of this forum/site and decided to signup.
I hesitate to allow a site/organization to have access to my computer for calculation purposes. Maybe some one could explain why a novice computer user should even consider this with all the concern over keeping one's personal computer secure from third party access? I can relate personally to the need to find a Big C cure, If the need is for computer calculation time is so important, why not get spare time from the giant resources vs. a multitude of small home computers?

FWIW my build consists of
ASUS P4P800-E board,
Intel P4 800mHZ 3.2 gHZ HTT PCU,
4 DDR 512 Kinston RAM;
Radeon 9800 Pro 128 mHZ:
Atop Z-Alien server case w 120mm exhaust, 2 80mm intake fans .
Win XP PRO
Researching additional and replacement fans. Summertime here gives a whole new meaning to word hot!! 24.09.06N 110.19.8W

BTW if anyone has a spare Gmail invite I would appreciate being able to give it a try. contact: millsml@hotmail.com Subject: Gmail

Enuf chain dragging,

What exactly is this topic about? I'm relocatting it temporarilly to the forum I *THINK* it will belong in.

Alright, I have seen quite a few scams before. I have tested and laughed at alot, too. This, is not a scam. It just runs in the background of your computer((by that, I mean a small space that isn't being used, and it doesn't bother you or anything)).

If I can, I'd like to make some suggestions. This is one beast of a CPU:
AMD Athlon 64-Bit 3400+ Processor

And with a powerful CPU such as that one, you will want a powerful cooling fan. Right now mine is faulty and stuck on maximum speed, which sounds like a fuckin' jet fighter. But I know my computer won't overheat.

Dear God tell me you don't have 4 sticks of 512 MB RAM. That's 2 GB of memory! Who in the hell needs that much!? :o

I wouldn't change that video card much. It's a pretty good one, if you ask me. Infact, I'd like to have a 9800. Though, I'd prefer the two beasts being installed into the PS3, but hey, that's just me.

Ok, um... Well... That's all I'll say for now.

Yep, that is correct. Actually ordered 3 stiks in error and then got into owner's manual section on configuration and found that 'any three memory sockets will function in single channel mode. So got another stick locally to allow dual channel.
Remember I'm a newbie I'm putting the new one together with a goal of running a AeroFly Pro flight simulation program to assist myself and some local young kids in the 'how to' of R/C flight..

BTW, hard drive is Maxtor SATA 200 GB.
Cooling additions will probably be; 1) CPU: Arctic Cooling Freeze 4 80mm, 2) Front case intake: Antec 75012 120mm (980-1720rpm 34-60cfm) 3) VGA : Arctic Cooling ATE Silencer 1 Rev 2

I'm open for suggestions.

I found the Grid.org site after my first post here aind feel more comfortable with the possibility of becoming a 'cruncher". May have missed it, do you have a forum on Grid.org or just a thread?

Still learning

Yes we have a forum for grid though it's not that active - hoping to change that!

http://www.iceteks.com/forums/show.php/act/SF/f/23

If you need help in the process of joining don't hesitate to post since we're always glad to have new crunchers. :)

That's nice, having 4 ram slots, I only have 3 and I'm thinking of putting another 512 in it to have a 1.5GB... or I might put it in my server which only has 512 with 500 in use. lol People say linux is not resource hungry. It is, it just manages it more efficienctly.

Oh and by joining UD you get a free gmail account when you join our team, so you're in luck here!

I recently((a few days before Christmas)) put my computer together. I had never even went inside a computer to change something before that. I looked at what was in there, and it was common sense how to put the new stuff together. People think it's hard to put a computer together. Maybe getting those damn RAM sticks in. And that stupid cooling fan was pretty annoying. To build a PC, you don't need any sort of computer knowledge besides parts and peices.

I only have two sticks of 512... I feel weak.

Well, I'll be heading off this topic for now. Sorry I haven't been active recently, haven't been using the internet much for the past few days. Soon I will be getting less active again as I need to get a job to buy the next gen consoles.

I am sorry, I cant help you.
Have no Gmail.
Not sure I would want Gmail.
I manage quite well with the bunch of email accounts I have now.
Must be at least a dozen (12), of which I only use 2-3.
