Boot Up Wars - The game

Post by Red Squirrel »

Bootup wars
This game, mostly played by high school and 1st year college students, is an intensive war of who boots their computer first. This game is best played with 2 players but theoricly can have an unlimited amount. You can have your entire class participate in a game at the computer lab for loads of fun.

This game is best played with slow Celeron computers and all PCs involved in the game must be clones, for fairness. The object of the game is to race against your opponents and boot up to a set position. This is usually the login screen, but to make it more challenging you can decide on a specific application that must be completely loaded. In addition to booting up first, you must have the most amount of points then whoever boots up in a 5 minute time frame starting after the first person booted successfully. After this 5 minute period the game is over and whoever is booted and has the most points wins.

While you're opponent's computer is loading, you must do everything possible to delay his or her bootup by conducting some of the activities in this point table:

Attacks/Points
"Poweroff" Push power button - 1 point
This involves physically reaching over to push the power button.

"Reset" Push reset button - 2 point
This involves physically reaching over to push the reset button. As this is smaller then the power button, it is harder, but gives more points, and you do not benefit in the delay resulted by the opponent having to turn it back on, like in the "poweroff" move.

"Disconnection" Unplug power supply - (-1) point
While this is easy and very affective, you actually loose a point, but may be the only solution when your opponent is nearly booted up.

"Area blackout" Turn off or unplug a nearby power bar - 5 points (10 points if your computer is not affected)
This is very affective in large groups as you can run away from your workstation to unplug a farther power bar. In computer labs power bars are usually conveniently located behind computers making it nice and easy to use this attack on people behind you.

"Keyboard Error" Unplug keyboard - 15 points
This will cause a delay in opponent activities required to continue boot up (such as logging in). Use this attack cautiously, as it may stop you from further keyboard related attacks. This is best done after POST.

"Win Mouse Err" Unplug mouse - 10 points
Similar to Keyboard Error, but much more stealthy, as it can be done even before POST without user even knowing.

"DEL" Press Del key at POST - 10 points
This involves strategic planning and is usually done immediately after one of the power related attacks. It involves forcing the opponent into the bios, by pressing his or her del key at the right moment. This may stun n00bs for a few moments, causing extra delay time.

"PAUSE" Press pause key after POST - 6 points
This is similar to the DEL attack. But instead, you press on your opponent's Pause key while windows is loading (before graphic drivers load). This causes the loading to stop and requires the user to press enter to continue. More effective when used multiple times in a row.

"SAFE MODE" Throw user in safe mode - 20 points
Difficulty level differs from OS to OS as some keystrokes required may be further to reach from your seat. This involves invoking the opponent's computer into safe mode or similar non-normal mode. This attack is great when combined with an immediate Keyboard Error attack.

"Net Send Flood" Send netsend message flood (100 popups minimum) - 40 points
This may not work if finish position is prior to logging in, but otherwise is great to delay opponent from reaching goal. This takes strategic planning in knowing the netbios name of his or her computer, and writing a batch file to send a flood of messages. If you have already reached your goal but simply want to avoid others with more points then you from reaching it, you can invoke it to the entire workgroup instead of a specific computer.

"Dark Cave" turn down brightness and contrast on monitor -100 points
This attack takes a long time, especially when body contact is allowed, but is easy if the opponent is away from his or her workstation to attack another opponent.

"Virus Disk" force user to open delaying program -150 points
This can be difficult to conduct but is very effective. Force a program such as a while(1) {WinExec} loop to run on opponent computer. This creates a very large delay time. Transfer medium can be anything from a disk to a network. Take advantage of writable shared network paths to attack multiple opponents simultaneously.

"Run it!" Open over 100 instances of a program - 200 points
Hold down various combination of shortcut keys such as Winkey+E to cause a program to open many times. May be combined with the Virus Disk attack by making the program automate this process.

"RPC" Multi-PC automated Network attack - 300 points
Thanks to all the RPC related security flaws in windows XP, hope the game lab runs windows XP and worm your way to victory! 100 Bonus points if you write your own worm.

"Chain Lightning" Build and turn on a tesla coil or vangegraff - 25000 points
Nearly impossible due to lack of required time and building materials in the lab, but if possibility strikes, this attack is very lethal, but only works after you have successfully logged in.

Note that points only apply when you conduct an attack when you have not reached your boot up goal. If you fall off your chair during or immediately after an attack, the points do not count. Also, if you are bleeding, any attacks you do will not count towards your points. (Only effective when body contact is on)

Players are immediately disqualified if they use body contact when it is not allowed for the game, however, they gain 1 point per minute while the attacked opponent is bleeding or physically incapable of playing (ex: putting bandages or seeking medical attention) when body contact is on.

Once you have reached your boot up goal, your computer must remain in operating condition for 1 minute. However, anyone who conducts an attack on such machine is immediately disqualified.

Special Shots
There are various special shots that can be used to enhance game play, these are similar to the attacks but do not all involve the computer. When physically attacking, only these attacks are valid if body contact is off unless otherwise specified.

"Dismount" - Cause opponent to fall off chair, loosing points, and time.

"Soft Projectile" - Throw a mouse pad or other soft projectile to try and invoke an attack such as the Poweroff. Attacks will gain double the points if done this way and an additional point for each feet of distance it is done from.

"Double Strike" - Conduct 2 attacks within a 5 second time frame. This gives 10 extra points.

"Armor" - Hold down an object at the right location to block an attack. Object can be a body part such as a hand, only if body contact is on.

"Armor Ignore" - using a sharp object such as a pencil, stop opponent from using the Armor special shot.

"Mortal Strike" - Combine two big attacks such as RPC and Virus Disk. 100 points extra for this.

"Concussion blow" - This is automatic if any attack or set of attacks which leave opponent delayed for over 30 seconds. 100 points for this. You gain 100 extra points per 1 minute period of this.

"Moving shot" - This is whenever you attack while moving towards or away from opponent computer. 50 extra points per attack.

"Bleed attack" - This is only available when body contact is on, it involves making opponent bleed, delaying him or her and making it impossible to gain points. (points are not calculated while bleeding)

Note that players must stay on their chair at all times, but may move around the lab by rolling. Game should be played on computer chairs for best fun.

Anything such as programs used in Virus Disk attack MUST be programmed or accired off the internet on site during game time. Any users caught using premade scripts or programs are disqualified. Rigging opponent machines prior to start of game will also result in disqualification.

Boot Up Wars - The game

LOL, nice. Some people blue screen chicken, but this game is way more fun. Don't forget the window u s enter command or the alt + f4 enter command too. If ever you play passed the boot up screen and have to wait until the first person enters paint, if somebody manages to shut down the comp with shortcut keys, they get 500 points! Oh btw, nice flying dismount, I'd give you a good 500 points for that one. 250 points for successfully hitting my power button while I smacked you in the chops, the other 250 for flying off your chair and making a huge thump in HTML class. :P :roflmao2:
