What would you max out?

Post by Red Squirrel »

I seen this topic on another forum but it was closed because it was a "dumb topic" but I think it can get pretty interesting actually..

Let's say you were given 2,000 bucks to build a computer and wanted to max out one thing, what would it be? By max out I mean both quality (ex: corsair ram instead of generic) and number (more MB).

In my case I'd probably max out the hard drive. Get a very big, fast one. Maybe two. Ram would be my second option. Not in quality, but in quantity. ex: get 3GB of kinston, when the same money could buy 1024M corsair.

I'd have to say hard drive. It's what I need the most. I have two tiny hard drives. Compared to the rest of my computer, my hard drives are complete and utter crap, and so is my graphics card. So second would be graphics.

I would probably spend the most money on my monitor. It’s the thing I have to look at the most. :)

I'll max out hard drive, and memory. Graphic card and processor follows next, and the other bs after.

Forgot : My case would be the cheapest possible. My mouse, a simple logitec optic one with three buttons, a logitec keyboard [total cost : about nothing]

Need a 19 inches monitor, a good old one, like a cheap KDS or a LG one.

And still forgot : speakers : 15$ labtec 2.0 or 4.1 for 40$... [CAN $]

Be careful with LG, just got one for a customer, it says 17 inch, but they mean the monitor itself is 17 inches, but the screen is more like 16. When I saw the box I'm thinking "gee that's kind of small, maybe there's no sterafoam or something" then on the box, in fine print it says 16 inch viable area.

So a 19 might end up being a 17. :D

At first, I was thinking "motherboard" because Logically, to max out ANY of those components, if your motherboard is crap, you ain't going anywhere. Then I figured the topic was generic, so I say "video card". Gotta love the Ultra high graphics feel ;).

I knew about the max out of a monitor. In fact, most compagnies do so. So watch out with everyone, get paranoid ^^

I,d Max out the Video card It's probably along with the cpu the most expensive single piece of hardware your going to put into your new computer if your into gamming... Buying carefully the rest of your components you could still keep it under $2000 especially if you mod your own case for good air flow.. It really depends on what your building a Top performing A64 and 2,000 bucks is gone real fast. Rams not too bad if you shop around... Believe me on the ram I spent 2 weeks comparing timmings speed, quality and names before I chose what I wanted and at the price I wanted.. In canada prices are all over the place on Hardware and I don't know why.. A Really good p/s is about $160 cdn or so and Hard drives are huge and a lot cheaper compared to even a year ago..

Yeah Canada prices are insane but yet sometimes there's super good deals and it makes me wonder how they can afford it, since I have access to bulk wholesale suppliers and even there it's more expensive then the states for mostly everything. Even low end ram I'll pay over 100 bucks for a stick of 512.

Hardrives went down big time though, I can get a 200 gig for less then $200! For 120's I can actually get them nearly lower then 100 bucks.

But then again gota watch out, since I saw a 20 gig for like 300 bucks and it was a 4200rpm ide... Customer wanted a low HDD, but it was actually cheaper to get a big one. lol

Yep I shopped around and the ram I origionally wanted kept going up in price evertime i tried to order it I got a email that the price wasn't right and that it was $60 more... I said Ahhhh No thats not the price on the website which they had changed anyways I ended up ordering 1 gig of Mushkin PC4000 for $370 including taxes and shipping for my new computer...And I consider that a good deal for that ram because of it's ability to usually run tighter timmings at less than rated speed which a lot of PC4000 won't do. I still want a Very high end V/C but the prices here are just nuts.. A lot of hardware can be found at descent prices if you shop around almost everything except for top end v/c  Even good quality LCD's have come way down believe me I got a great deal on a NEC 19"

Yeah LCDs went down quite a bit. Thing I learned with video cards is to not get the latest but a step lower, since they'll have a higher one the day after anyway. :P
