high cpu/ worms/trojans
I recently reinstalled win xp home. I haven't put sp1 back on...i'm on dial up. I do not go to any odd sites and have adaware and spybot and mcaffee virus scan...how have suddenly gotten a few virus/trojan whatever things stuck on my computer already?
mcafee keeps telling me it cleaned sdbot.win over and over again ...i've noticed somtimes my processes are running at 100%....I know just enough to mess things up. I'm aware of things in start- up but not sure what to keep or get rid of. same for running processes (how do I copy that stuff to paste on this site if need be?)
I've gotten rid of a few start-up things that were not good...host 32 and istsvc.exe a handful of others. I think I have bad things in my running processes too.
if nothing is showing up in my spyware stuff and mcafee how do I rid myself of this stuff? Should I be downloading every update on earth...every patch????
thanks.

XP is fully of remote exploits, so you probably had one go in before you had a chance to install a firewall. Average time it takes is like 10 minutes or something, for a non-firewalled XP machine to get infected or hacked when connected to the internet. So my best bet is to reinstall it, and don't connect it to the internet until you have installed a firewall on it.

that fast? even with dial up?
I have had my computer checked on line and it is supposedly stealth.
even when i was using mcafee firewall i was getting trojans.
would installing sp1 and updates matter alot? should I bother if my computer has crap on it and I dont have the time to reinstall right now?

Were you connected to the internet? If not, then we can rule out trojans, unless you're using a cracked copy that someone put trojans in.
But normally yes, it does not take very long. SP1 would help, but SP2 is debatable, some people don't have problems, some do, so you may want to stick with only SP1. As long as you have a decent firewall and up to date A/V you're pretty safe, even better is a router.

do i just get on with it and put sp1 and patches on and see what happens?
thanks

yeah, maybe it's just stuff you never noticed. XP is pretty bloated and there's lot of junk in it by default. You could check on google to see what you can get rid of

just a thought but you can go to PC pit stop make a free account then you can scan and use the help URL to show us what the scan found like all processes n it will tell you what most processes are for
i also use win Xp home and it runs at 100% CPU alot of times for no reason but i mostly catch it when something stops responding so if your got like IE not responding that would throw the CPU 100% for min or 2

If I had a spare computer I'd install windows XP just for the joy of crashing it. See how many tool bars I can fit on the screen, it would be like tetris.

I would still like to know for my own good how you make a snapshot of your screen?
Also would like to say I appreciate people responding. This is a good forum guys.

You can use the printscreen key right after f12 that will take a screenshot. Some computers make you do Ctrl-PrintScrn.

ok after you have the test on that screen you should should find some sort of help button that gives you the option to email the results or use a link (i would post screen shots but my IE right now) anyways just copy link n post it here
for screen shot you just press "Prt Scrn" button on the keyboard right side of F12
then click Start>All Programs>Accesseries>Paint
after paint is open hold CTRL and press V to paste the screen
then click file>save as>jpg (i think defalt is bmp so to save file size use jpg or gif)
