Need configuration help

I've been out of the "loop" for a while, as far as computing goes. I'm in the market to build another desktop and my budget for the box is about $500. Are there any top performers I should know about?

Perhaps you should show me a good config for this price! I prefer NewEgg and AMD.

I want to be able to play HL2, by the way.

500 bucks would not go too far around here. Would pay a HDD and a mobo, that's about it.

But from my experience AMD is definatly the way to go, and cheaper then intel. I have a 2700+ in my PC and it's never let me down. As for ram I can't really recomend anything since I just go with generic, but for the same price I can get generic (100's) you can probably get some corsair ram or crucial, whatever is you're preference. But from what I hear corsair is the way to go for gaming and overclocking.

Oh that's right you crazy canadians.... This is $500 USD, and remember it doesn't include the monitor - that's where the real money is going to be spent! I'm thinking of getting either the Apple 20" or 23" flat panel displays.

It's gonna be slick.

haha just the monitor alone would be like near a grand here, that's before it's even converted to Canadian currency.

Actually I can build a mid power PC for about $1,300 here with monitor so that's about 900 US, so basically everything is about twice the price, if more.

bubba there is not any good equipment that will play highspeed games for 500

the video cards are starting about half that price for the good ones.

then you need a fast modem the 56k kind are cheap about 30 bucks or less.

the hard drives will kill ya on price then the ram the motherboard the power supply the case. the cpu, the sound card. the dvd rw the cdrw

your going to end up with about 1200 bucks for a good fast one. after you buy all that and keyboad mouse and monitor.

with out the new keyboad mouse or monitor you might get away with 900 dollors or so. but not 500. the prices are not dropping like they were two years ago they have pretty much leveled off.

you might beable to get a good dell cheap go to their site and try the free online configuration program they have and see what the prices are for them.

but if you want too you can buy from red i am sure he would get the best things for you.

just he is in canada and you know how them canadian guys like to see green since they are in the snow most the year so they really ask for the green.

but you might also be able to still get stuff from tigerdirect dot com wait a while on that they are in miami and there is another hurricanie coming their way. so they might be slow right now.

but you could look at the prices for their bare bones kits and get an idea of what you'll need. just dont skimp on the power supplys buy the name brand of them i got the cheap one and on the same day i got it i went to the local parts store and got one from them that worked.

but name brand stuff is good.

500 buckaroo's? your asking for a lot with a small price. your not patrick norton are you?

you might beable to go to the screen savers archives on the http www g4techtv dot com site and get a story by patrick on the one he built for 500 buckaroo's

but he was willing to cut back on some things. that he wanted but ran the cost up.

and now the 64 bit cpus are on the market and they aint cheap and still there is no really good software os or programs for that cpu yet might be a year or two before they get good stuff for that.

Now when that happens there will be all kinds of good 32 bit cpus and parts at cheap prices. but not so much now.
