The Any Key
Most keys of the keyboard are not worth writing an article for. For example, we all know what the “a” key is. The “b” key is a bit more complex, but same idea, and so on up to Z.
But the any key. This is a very special key. It is not like any other key. In fact, it is so different that most people don’t notice it on the keyboard. In math, there are some numbers that are like that. For example, if you wanted to do the square root of –9, it would be impossible right? What times what gives you a negative? Play around for about 15 minutes with a calculator, and you’ll realize it’s impossible. However, mathematicians came up with something to fix this, called imaginary numbers. It is known as I. I is in theory equivalent to the square root of –1. So if you do the square root of –9i, you’re actually doing the square root of 9, and getting an answer of 3! Turning the impossible into the possible.
Now, in computer science, a similar problem arose as well. Many programs require you to press the any key, but it is impossible to do, simply because of the vast complexity of this key and the fact that it is imaginary similarly like imaginary numbers. So computer engineers researched hard for an answer to this problem. See, the problem lies here: most people say the any key does not exist, but really it does. But it is impossible to point it out on a keyboard or physically press that single key at a given moment, but it’s there. Hundreds of equations arose, and none of them worked, to find the real answer to what the any key really is.
But after a bit of research, it has come to the conclusion that the any key is actually every key which is proved by this equation:
ANYKEY = ONEOF(EVERYKEY)
EVERYKEY still has to be defined, but even then, it is fairly simple:
EVERYKEY = ALL_KEYS_ON_KEYBOARD
Which is a variable built into the keyboard in which the value is usually 101, but sometimes changes. So in conclusion, the any key can actually be any key available on the keyboard. It can be A, it can be B, it can be ENTER, it really does not matter!
Today, users around the world lie amazed or perhaps confused at the complexity of this matter. Next time you are greeted with “Press any key to continue”, you will now know what key you are suppose to press.
