Windows XP Folder Properties Problem

I don't have XP or used it enough to experience or know what could cause this problem, but it sounds like the dialog box itself is probably corrupted, this dialog is in shell32.dll I think (in win98 it is, I assume that did not change in later windows versions). Maybe try to get that file from a working computer and replace the current. You'll have to do this in dos or in a way that windows does not use it, and if your partition is ntfs you won't be able to do that... another option is to reinstall windows (no format) to see if it fixes it, if not, a format and reinstall will definatly do it, but it's just long and tedious to do, especially with windows xp. Hope it works, and welcome to the forum.

What exactly do you mean? Do you get any errors? Are the options greyed out or just not there?

hmm, well sharing and properties are part of the same dialog box, just different tabs, but if it works for files, the dialog box is ok so it's not shell32.dll like I was saying. it's more of a file type issue or something... this is probably something that will indeed require a clean install. It's something broken in the system files affecting folders I think. Could be a registry problem too. Folders are file types just like any other, but they are "special" because they work much differently, and it's the registry that makes file types (and other windows things) the way it is. So it's probably a registry issue more then anything.

Hey. I'm having the same problem with trying to change the properties of my folders. Some time back I chose a different icon for a couple of folders, and since have decided I don't like them, and want to change them back. But when I right click on the folder, and select Properties, NOTHING HAPPENS! Absolutely nothing. But here is the really strange part. I'm having this exact problem on both my desktop and on my notebook. I don't think both OSes are corrupted. I think there's a simple answer. But right now I sure don't know what it is.

Weird, definatly some kind of bug I suppose, but knowing what causes it and how to fix it would be great for when it comes. I hardly have experience with winxp so I can't help. I use win2k and it has been very stable for me.

By the way welcome to the forum.

i had this problem once along time ago kind of like brandon but i still use xp.

i dont have it now as far as i can tell.?

i do seem to remember getting it fixed by doing a system restore? back to before the trouble was showing up..

no i dont have the trouble anymore i just tried it and changed an icon. so the properties are showing up.

here is what i would do.

1. check the size of your swap file and adjust to the size of 2250 mb's max 2249 mb's min.

2. clear your icon cache.

3. get the free tweaking program xteq setup from xteq.com and tweak your system make sure you have your smartest computer geek in the family there and or your smartest friend there to help you tweak it.

4. get the tweakui program from microsoft. go to google and type in search line for tweakui then click i feel lucky it will take you to the proper page.

5. set up ms tweakui and repair icons.

6. do system restore if nothing above works.

i have had luck with system restore but not may others have. of course i dont expect it to restore programs just the ms system like it says it will do.

good luck. :biglaugh:

I had same problem: Folder Properties was displayed in context menus but failed to operate (including ALT-Left-Click).
I had only just installed XP and added a few programs. The problem seemed to occur whilst I was attempting to share an internet connection using XP's ICS Wizard.
I had also been a bit stingy with my System Restore filesize <_> (200M), and had no option to restore the system when I tried, so I used the System File Check command from the command shell (sfc/scannow) which took about five or ten minutes, it didn't report any errors but when I restarted my system the problem was solved and I can now view folder properties as normal. :)
You will need you XP insallation disc to run sfc.

HTH

sorry my bad writing up there, i am a little hurry
ok
definetly it was the firewall
i put it not to auto-start with windows
and it worked perfectly
also my pc started faster (before it stayed like waiting for something at start, like halted)

maybe a cure could be to manual start the firewall every time.....
greets

in norton you can go to

congfigure
program control
add
search for the c: windows system32 inetsrv inetinfo.exe
and then permit all
and AUTO START with windows
DONE
it works perfectly
now, i have to go and fix the problems caused on my reinstalled (i thought reinstalling wxp was going to solve the problem!, should have searched in google first)

Reopened and solution posted from Report to Moderator Link.

Some solutions:

1- Strangely windows explorer may give information when multiple objects
are selected. This may ease your problem.

2- If you have IIS installed. Inetinfo file must have enough privilege,
so change the firewall settings if you have.

IIS services: ---IIS admin service
---Protected storage
---World Wide web publishing service
---FTP publshing services must all start (there may be more)

3- If you don't need IIS, you can remove it from add & remove programs.
Check add & remove windows components.

4- Use windows file protection, the dos command line is below
sfc /enable and sfc /scannow.

5- Be sure there is no bed sectors in hard drives.

6- Use repair console. To do this boot computer using windows 2000 cd.
And verify all files.

well stew the trouble above seems to have been with the old first install ment of the windows firewall or internetinfo dll.

but you just indicate a slow computer. that might be cleared up by doing a registrey cleaning. get a registery cleaning program for xp from one of the freeware sites.

i like www.snapfiles.com or www.nonags.com

or you might try changing the menu reaction speed? i cant remember
where i seen that tweak at ? either for the mouse or the desktop properties ?

or in the xteq setup program it has lots of tweaks and it could be one of them?

good luck

Are any of you using SP2 for WIN XP? Because if you are, that's a good indication that there's some kind of bug. I know that when I had SP2 on my computer, I had come across many bugs (Because SP2 sucks). For those of you who ARE using SP2, I wouldn't even bother with it. It's crap, junk and it will always BE junk. If you have a good virus scan and firewall, just get rid of SP2. U don't need it. That's where I think the problem lies. SP2 does alot of weird stuff. It didn't let me open windows explorer the first time. ALWAYS the second time. Kind of weird. I got rid of SP2 and 75% of all my computer related errors vanished :D. Deleting SP2 is not easy though. You would need to input some kind of command line in RUN in order to delete it, but I did it the half-a$$ way and just did a point-restore. So, if you noticed the problems and you have installed SP2 , I'd wager that it's the patch. If you're just using win xp or win xp SP1, then I have no clue why it would be doing that.
