What P3 did they have? If it was 100Mhz FSB I could have upgraded it to 1GHz
It was a slot 1 right?

Not sure what kind of slot it was, probably slot one. The problem with this pc was also the case. the PSU was in front of the cpu, making it impossible to see/access it. It would of been too much trouble and not worth upgrading. Now it's a 1.3Ghz Athlon so that's like 5 times better and faster. The athlon should run higher but the mobo is set lower then it should and I did not bother changing the jumper where it goes. the desk is horrible for accessing the pc. it's good enough for what they use it for.

There's something wrong with it but it's impossible to get parts that old now so not sure what I'll do with it. Probably sell it on ebay for people who collect antiques or something. for all I know it could simply be a bad ram stick, or partially burnt out processor, but I have no way to test it with other components since I don't have other components to test with. It's nothing too bad since it would still POST, it just would not boot, it would BSOD all the time, even after a fresh install of windows. Red hat intall would freeze, everything would freeze. That computer had problems like that since we had it, but it just grew worse until it did not boot anymore.

yeah but it would probably cost about as much as buying a new one... I'm almost done saving up for my good server anyway. Only have the cpu, video card and hard drive. So that's about 300 bucks worth of stuff if I get it off my supplier. I'm not sure if I want to go sata or ide they seem to be almost the same price for 120. Or I might stick with ide and go 180. I'll use the server for backups and stuff. what sucks is that the video card from the p3 does not fit in the mobo. It only supports 1.5 volt cards, the slot is different. I don't get that, a very good mobo, but they had to cut corners and make it support old 1.5v cards. if the 8Meg card does not fit, what will? lol. but I'll get a pci one.

PCI isn't nearly as good as AGP.
You lose some bandwidth, but if it works, then go for it.

It's a server. it could be black and white 256 shades for all I care. It will probably always be displaying text anyway. (linux console). I'll probably hook it up to a kvm downstairs and mostly use VNC to access it. I can't really buy from places like newegg because it's almost double the price and shipping will kill me. Might as well pay 50 bucks canadien and get it direct from my supplier and pay about 10-20 bucks of shipping (depends of I ship other items, which I will most likely do, probably the processor).
The thing is my debit card has a limit of 300 so I have to make sure orders don't surpass that. I'll have to get that changed. Lately I have lot of money coming in so I'm taking advantage of this for my server. I think within a month I'll have it all up and running, without too much of a dent in my current funds.

I'd say go at least with a 1Ghz computer. Something more if possible. But ISPs don't allow it,which really sucks, so you would not have it for long.

Oh and it depends on the traffic. Iceteks was hosted on win98 P450 since it's all I had, and it worked, but as soon as there were more then 3 people on the forum, it croaked.

I wouldn't try anything illegal Vic.
You can get your ISP account removed if you do that.

You can't, but you can sign up for a hosting service.
There are really cheap ones out there, and it's not illegal.
There are alot of free ones too.

Some ISPs allow you to have servers though... Check with the ISP you have.

you can usualy get a business package that allows you, but here they actually cap it to 15GB and yet you pay 150 instead of 40 and the residential package is unlimited. go figure...
