Not sure if you can burn in dos, but I think you can get a UDF program in dos that will burn to CD-RWs, it will make it act as if it was a floppy and give it a drive letter, but I'm pretty sure it has to be a CD-RW as you can read, write and erase/modify.

You can burn in dos. It requires having the drivers set up (which is minor) but more importantly it requires software that will operate in command mode and allow the burn. A cdrw is not required, regular cdr will do. Symantec's Norton Ghost has the ability to work in command mode and burn cd's as well. Also several data recovery programs also have that ability. You might want to use data recovery software that allows you to recover from inside the OS rather than at command prompt.

I forget about it, have not used UDF in long. I used to use a CD-RW as a hard drive, but I never knew they weared out so I learned the hard way when I almost ended up loosing all my data. That was a few years ago. But what ladytech said should work as well, I forgot about the recovery programs such as Ghost and such. That should get you somewhere. B)

well now ,
i have a couple of data recovery programs all will let me use the floppy drive.
i`m not sure on the burner..i use data recovery pro has a lot of tools for recovering the hhd..i need to sit down and work the program on a couple of computers i have here to see if it will run a usb burner.this way i can just take the burner with me and make the job easier on me...

i missed something the last i knew a cdrom doesn`t burn i thought it was a read only .not a burner???all my recovery programs i have to boot the computer to run the programmeaning i have to put the cd or floppy in and reboot to be able to run the program.all the ones i have have to be ran this way as far as i know i`m in dos .i might be wrong on this but i think they all run in dos.

Sorry when I said CDR I meant cd recorder as opposed to a CDRW which is a cd rewriteable. I should have made myself clearer. You had stated you were pretty sure you needed an RW for the ability to read/write and modify when all that is really needed is a CDR (recorder) that is the point I had meant to get across.

There are several data recovery programs that let you work inside the OS. I use Easy Recovery Professional from Ontrack among others. I've seen it restore data from hard drives that were undetectable by both the BIOS and the OS.

Here is something I have just found when using a boot disk to recover "Writable CDs and DVDs may be used if you can load the software that treats the CD like a destination in Windows (i.e. CD Direct methods). This is not always an option - it is dependent on CD/DVD writing software and the ability to load Windows. UNC mapping is not an option" quoted from Ontrack support.

Also here is a link to a site that creates DOS cd bruning software. Perhaps using a boot cd you may be able to utilize it with your recovery software. It's freeware and still under development. http://doscdroast.freeweb.hu/index.html

And another that claims to allow you to burn to cd in DOS mode http://www.goldenhawk.com/dos.htm copy2cd.exe looks like what you may be looking for.
