motherboard or CPU???
recently got some new bits for my pc. 1 was a new motherboard. I installed it all and turned the PC on. All worked fine and it started to boot to windows but as i wanted to set the time etc in bios, i had to restart. So i restart, go to the bios menu and as i was changing the time and it crashed!. so i went to restart and all i get is no signal to monitor message. So i thought maybe my new graphics card went dead, so i replace with my old but still the same. So stripped the system down to just motherboard, processor, old heatsink, graphics card, power and stick of ram. Turn it on and still the same prob. by now im annouyed as i don't know the problem. So i decided to change the processor with an old one 1gig athlon and what do u know it works! So i got a new processor (amd 2800+ xp) put that in and it works too. So i put everything back together, turn it on and guess what? got that error again. So i stripped it back down and it still don't work.
So im asking any idea on what is going on? and how can i solve it?
thanx

motherboard or CPU???
ok lets start from number one.
you said you bought a new mb.
what is it was a new mb cdrom for the drivers included with it or did you get it from a place that did not give you the driver cdrom?
what is the power supply for your system.
what is the orginal cpu that was put in to the mb that booted the first time and then you replaced with the older one.?
look at the book for the mb and see what jumpers you need to set on the board for the different processors.
check the bios go in and see if you can set the optimized or safe defaults settings. try the safe defaults first.
then when that is done and windows is loaded stick that driver cdrom in the computer and set up the drivers for the new board. since you did say you just booted it and tried to go in to the bois. that makes me think you did not set up the drivers first. sorry if you did but it did not sound like you did.
but i am thinking the drivers are at fault if you can't get it working and they are not in error then it might be the jumper settings on the mb.
the new boards are to be set up allready for different cpu's but you never can tell.
i got this new power supply but it wont boot up just flashes the leds on mine?? it is new but i think it is broken also.
there is one more thing you might think about.? on my other computer i had the mother board do the same thing. and it was the fault of a chip on the board that blew out. they had to come and replace the board. call the manufacture and see if there is a known problem with the chips and certian hardware or cpu's.
i hope you still have the warrenty on it.

sorry i did not realize you gave that info the post the first time i read it. i had to re read it. but i still think it might be a chip on the mb is blown out

I would try the safe defaults in the BIOS, as rovingcowboy suggested. You said everything was fine until you made a change in the BIOS...that's where your problem started.

Also, did you make the bios detect the hard drives? It could be the problem but I don't think so, but still worth checking in case you did not. Usually it will just say "boot error insert disk" or something similar.

you guys have got the wrong idea and i think it maybe due to the way i wrote it so i will sum it up abit easier.
Yes MB came with cd-rom drivers.
First processor i tried was amd 2000+. I never changed anything in bios. i got to bios screen 'started' to change the date and date only and thats where it crashed. It never cam back on after that. Just got "no signal to monitor" message. Tried clearing bios and that did not work.
2nd processor was a 1 gig athlon. I just saw the screen where it detects hard drives and ram etc before going to windows, then i turned it off cause i was convinced it was cpu.
3rd processor was amd 2800+ it worked with barebone stuff. put back into case with every thing and it don't work. went back to barebone and still don't work.
I can't get to bios to change anything. as all i get is no signal to monitor. The monitor is working.

This is an odd problem. I would think it may be a defective motherboard or something. But it's brand new so it's not quite likly, though sometimes it does happen. Hopefully it has a warranty and you can maybe switch it for another and see what happends.

I looked up your mobo on the web, you may have already read this. If not you might pick up some info. that's useful.

Seems to me it would probably be a bad motherboard. It's definitely not a drive or driver problem becuase you should be able to startup fine without them, though you may not be able to start the OS. It quite possible that you may have gotten a defective motherboard or that it received some static damage when you were installing it. I would reset the bios to the defualts and check through the settings to make sure everything is right first, then try it again. You may also want to swap out the RAM if you haven't already. That's the only other thing that can cause the type of error you're getting.

The only other thing i can think of that manadren didn't mention is pulling the board out of the case and testing it on your workbench, reseat your ram, and cpu, and only install a known working video card, pci if you have it. then an agp card after you establish the board works.

ok you say the monitor is working?
but when you try to get it to boot it says check the connection no signal to monitor.
or is your monitor an older one and just says no signal to monitor?
manadren and fishyfool seem to be getting closer to this to me but i am thinking it is a bad chip either with the onboard video or the video card.
as i said in my orgianal post i had this same thing happen and it was the mother board, only i did forget to say that mother board had and on board via video chip that was bad.
if you dont have an onboard video card but you have a pci or agp one then it must be either not setted properly or have a bad chip on it. or the last thing i can think of is the mother board does not support that video card.
since you can get online go and get " The Ultimate Boot Cd " i think that is the name it is a free download and you can put it on a cdrom then use it to boot the computer it might beable to interceed between the monitor and the mother board as it will start in dos. and then you can use the tools on that cdrom to check your system and see if you can find the errors.
good luck.
and if all else fails take it back to the shop and have them check it and see if it still works for them.
edited this in.
i just checked the site that wren posted and found this chip "VIA KT266A " listed as being used on them mother boards. that is the one that blew out on my motherboard. that had this video problem and i had never even opened the case until after it blew out.

ok pull all the ram except for 1 stick and see if it boots up still no boot switch sticks and try again till you have tried all the sticks alone .
everytime i have come across this problem its been one bad stick of ram .
