  :(
:bsod:
Just heard that the new or latest windows Os. will be called "longhorn"

and that they are not going to have it beable to run any of the applications that are made for any other windows Os.
not even going to have it be backward compatiable in other words.

which means anything your using now will have to be remade and rebought and you will have to re type all your files and articals you now have on your computer as nothing will beable to see or read them.?

if this is a true rumor then it is the death song for microsoft because everyone will go to some other operating system.

i wont re buy or re type all the stuff i have now. no way.

I heard of longhorn too. I think it has to do with the DMCA and all that crap. If it really is true, I hope no one buys it and restarts everything, I would rather see M$ suffer for doing something stupid like that.

I wish Linux was standardlized that would be cool!

I wouldn't believe all these rumours that are circulating around the Internet. I don't think Microsoft will make Longhorn like people say it will. Microsoft realises that such moves would result in a loss of many customers. Microsoft knows how to do business.

Probably is a rumour but with M$ you never know. Look at WinXP, that's exactly what they did and it's the reason I never used it - I did not want to have to buy a new computer and new software for everything. Even the most popular apps such as photoshop and autoCAD are not compatible with XP! Sure there's patches, but it's pretty bad when you need patches for something to work normally.

I don't think that's true. Sure Longhorn will probably not be compatible with a lot of older windows apps [even less than 2k and xp], but I don't think they'd go that far. However, the whole drm thing in longhorn has already convinced me that it'll be a cold day in hell before I ever install that pos. 2k works fine for me, and I might consider XP again after 3 or 4 service packs, but I'm not going that far to be sell-your-soul bleeding edge.

well i for one will want to see the actual bloat in system requirements especially minimum memory. if history is any indicator, longhorn will probably require at least 384 MB of ram to run smoothly in which case to paraphrase manadren, it'll be a cold day in hell before i even think of ever putting on a new POS ms OS.

Only thing I don't like about red hat is that it won't install on a 486. Windows did... there's something wrong here. Of course, it took me 15 minutes to open up "my computer" but the bottom line is, it installed and linux did not. Gee, I had 16MB of ram, how much do they want me to put?!? :D

linux will install on a 486. you just can't install kde or gnome. you'll have to install it in graphical mode and then download and install a light window manager like fvwm or something.

Technicaly it should work like you said, but I tried it twice (6 days total of wasted time lol) and it would just crash durring installation. Could be a memory problem though, and I only had 16MB or something like that.

you can use a 486 as a webserver when u dont use the latest programs..
it can be still a usefull pc,even its an oldie

just to get back on topic... this may be m$ downfall right here or in the very least would cause m$ to have to spend big bucks to settle this.

http://www.itworld.com/Man/2687/IDG010628intertrust/

that's just the background. but the latest on that is that an oakland judge dimissed m$ request to dismiss this lawsuit for all 33 (or 35) counts. it seems m$ went into partnership with intertrust, took it's drm tech without licensing it, and then dumped intertech. the problem for m$ is that this lawsuit covers most of m$'s newest products from windows xp, office xp, wmp, etc...

personally this drm tech is just garbage anyway and there's rumors that it can be totally bypassed as of right now. i'm hoping m$ loses this suit, but not so much to see m$ go out of business or anything, just to see m$ take out that drm crap. if the verdict is in favor of intertrust, as i see it, then m$ has to either license drm or dump drm from its products and maybe the licensing would cause m$ to dump drm anyway. and intertrust loses out on the windows market and doesn't develop drm anymore. imo, tech was supposed to let me do more stuff with my content, not less.

I'm not going to be too worried about compatibility. Red, your comment about most apps not working on XP without patches... have you tried using XP's built-in compatibility mode? Sometimes it does the trick, and it's a feature that few people I know seem to have discovered.

And as far as DRM goes and other items like that, why worry? Right now we all have our choices of Operating Systems and we make our choices based on facts that impact us. Some of the games I have won't run on Linux or Mac, so I use Windows plus I have alot of experience with Windows. Don't get me wrong, I've used both Linux and Mac and I like the feel of both, but for now I'm keeping with my choice. Longhorn Alpha leaked to the net much like Whistler did in the days of XP (That was XP's codename, whistler) and I'm sure there's still alot of bugs to fix, but that's the way things go. Besides, if a software developper wants to embrace technology that protects his or her developped and commercially distributed software, then that is thier own right. You don't have to use the software if you don't want to, and they do deserve to be compensated for the time they put in to developping the software or the music as seems to be the biggest concern.

yes, if you want to use drm, then go for it. the problem with drm is the lawsuit which affects all microsoft's core tech and offerings, the fact it might not work protecting anyone's rights (artists and users), and the fact there's already reports that there's been problems with people using drm stuff they bought legally which is refusing to work. right now the lawsuit affects xp as if m$ doesn't settle with intertrust and loses its litigation with them, m$ may possibly be ordered to stop selling xp and other core software offerings. this may or may not affect longhorn since i speculated before, m$ really didn't need to use drm in the first place and they're developing palladium. but this lawsuit with intertrust and the oakland judge's ruling should have m$ concerned although end users shouldn't need to worry about it.
