The Official Case Mod Thread!

Post by rip_phreaker »

crimosn, check out a nice kingwin system for cooling, they look amazing and are easy to mod in some other extra's, usually they go for around 125$ CAD or so,

squirrel, ever try just getting a multiple resistance switch? easy to wire in and it would be a cheap way to make ur own fan controller w/o going out and buying all new 3 pin fans (u just can not see what ur rpm's are)

and a good tool for doing 120mm fans is an old cd  perfect size to dremel out a hole

and the dremel IS the best tool for case modding, just be sure to use the jigsaw attachment with a fine toothed metal blade then just use a file to round down sharp edges

squirrel, try getting some solder to make urself a grill and some thumbscrews (should be sold at any comp store) make the grill how ya want it to look using the solder (just bending it) then screw it in should work great

Hey never thought of using solder as a grill, would not be as strong, but would work and can be bended into anything possible. There's probably a way to make it stronger though. Factories use thick metal cables the same consistency as solder and manupulate them in a way to make harder metal stuff like nails, and screw drivers. I think it involves stretching it on rollers or something. I remember seeing that on How it's Made :P

great idea! try getting some copper wiring(the thin stuff) and just making a large mesh of it over solder, it would also act as a fan-air cleaner

Hmm yeah, when you cover coper with solder, it still gets pretty strong and hard, so creating a mesh with coper then covering it with solder would work. Then put a coat of wax on it to make it all nice and shiny. :D Something I'd have to try when I get bored or something.

Cool. You'll have to post it. I should get into case modding soon. I think mine is about updated, either I upgrade or make a totally new one. :D

Those control the fans and the red button controls the lights.

I made sure to leave room for 3-4 more buttons for easy future expansion. I may add like a reset button or something. If I really wanted to get serious I could even add a cd-rom eject button but that would be a bit more complicated as I'd have to open up the cd-rom drive too.
I'm loving that case!
The new acrylic case is presenting a challenge for me. I have been staring at it for 3 days now planning my first attack. I think I will add some Limo Black window film to some of the surface areas and some carbon fiber to some others. I want to show off my Ultra green Power supply and the water cooling system. I am hoping the case will look black when turned off but when powered up the lights will allow one to view the inside of the case.
Now THERE'S a cool idea. Come back to the forums and tell us how that turns out.
