So who ranks number 1? The Earth Simulator at the Earth Simulator Center in Yokohama, Japan clocking in at 35.86 TFlops. All that using a little 500Mhz NEC processor... well 5,120 of them anyway. But HP brings second place to the US with it's ASCI Q at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, clocking in at 13.88 TFlops. Third place is... Some guy's linux box! more specifically the MCR Linux Cluster of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Built by Linux Networx this sucker is also the fastest cluster computer clocking in a 7.634 TFlops using a buttload of 2.4Ghz intel Xeon processors.

Oh and Canada? You guys come in at #39 :P. Kudos to the University of Toronto for putting it together by themselves though. :yo:

That would be cool to own one of these. Must take up LOTS of room though!!! You probably need quite a lot of BTU power of A/C to cool that place down.

If only I could have a few million bucks and make a setup like this.... right at home... and be listed.

Then I could charge big companies to come over and process data on it. :biglaugh: You could not really run UD though, as it's all linux powered, and even if it were Windows, UD does not support more than one processor (clusters still act as many processors, I think). But, simply hooking up a few thousand PCs to a bunch of routers and installing UD would make it a pretty good reason to kick some serious butt. :D That's probably what I would do, get these huge switch or router with hundreds of ports, link them together to make a few thousand ports and hook up all those PCs together. POWER!!!

I thought it was kind of interesting that the #3 spot was using somewhat common equipment, that is a modified llinux distribution and a slew of intel Xeon Processors. Both the Earth Simulator and the ASCI Q use a proprietory OS and specialized processors (the earth simulator with custom NEC processors, and the ASCI Q with specialized Alpha processors - formally made by compaq, bought out by hp). Couple that with the fact that the Univeristy of Toronto made their own that made it in the top 50, and it seems all you need to make a supercomputer is a bit of money and a little know how.

Yah, could get in handy for those stressful moments when it just won't work.
