how many times do i have to try and set up this dang direct cable stuff.?
i been here all night. the computer says this then that then something else??
they said it was simple. hog wash.
i set up the winxp network made the set up disk it said to make put it in the windows me computer set up the network stuff in there. all named to match each other. like it says to do.
so why does the win xp say the cable is not connected when it is. going from either net to either net. 10 100 it should work.
just a thought but would the zonealarm on the cilent win me be causeing the winxp not to see the win me? even thought the set up said it would configure for firewalls.??

ok a couple more questions on this and then i use tnt.
but i have 2 computers. each with a network card with one plugin socket for the cable.
so is the cable i got the wrong one as in it came with a card so maybe it is to go from computer to wall???
do i need one of them cables that twist to go from computer to computer? or do i need a card that has two cable plugins like the modem has for the phones.???

You could get a crossover from PC to PC, but I would suggest a router, you just hook up the uplink to your modem or wall or wherever the net comes from in your house, then hook up each PC to the router ports. If you run out of ports in the future, you can plug in a hub.

Hehe, Something I'll have to do, but win2k is not too bad though. But since I don't have much hardware on this PC, it would be easy to switch, something to consider....

how old are you roving? I am 18 and I have been using linux since Jan1st 2003. I love it and even though some things are just hard to understand, I really do not have too many problems with it at all. I was just cleaning up some stuff in windows and somehow a whole bunch of .dll's got erased, so expect my next post to be from linux

You're right rovingcowboy...if I had started at an early age I would know a lot more and not have to learn it the hard way...trial and error! Sometimes I make so many errors, I can't remember what I tried!

rovingcowboy, if you go the router route (sorry about the pun), make sure it's a router/hub. it's the hub part that will get your network up and running. but most new routers nowadays have hubs built in. you can use crossover cables though too. but a router gives you a hardware firewall using NAT which is the best first defense since packets won't get to your computer. of course having a software firewall is good too in case you do download an e.t. program.

Yep. It's good to be double firewalled. If I could get this dang 486 to get the ISA cards detected by Linux, I'd install another firewall before the router. trippple security. It would also block my router's port 80 from being seen by my isp as they may think I'm running a server again.
