Re-install Home Upgrade Os

Post by Wren »

Got a problem here and need to do a clean install. I have XP Home Upgrade. I was told I will need the old OS CD which I don't have since it was traded for this machine. My current OS was loaded on this pc at the time of sale.

If it was an upgrade, you'll need both the upgrade and whatever OS was there before (win98 I guess?).

My main rule of thumb is when I install something, I make sure to have the CD for it, so if it's borrowed, I usually burn it.

Even internet downloads, I always keep the setup file in case they decide to charge in the future. A good example of this is Power Archiver. They now charge for it, but I still have a 1999 or whatever setup file, so it does the job until they change the standard in the zip format, hopefully never. :)

Thanks wldkos, I called the pc store where I bought the machine and they said they would give me a 98 CD to re-install my OS. When I traded my other pc they offered to load my copy of XP, so I knew they had to use something to get the upgrade OS on here in the first place. :)

Wow. That's great.

I was glad they made the offer. It was something I had not thought about when I did the trade-in. :dosgonebad:

I'll probably do the re-install this weekend. I don't like it either. I think there's some file corruption and it's easier to do a clean install than trying to find and fix the problem.

I hate clean installing too. It's just so much trouble to reconfigure everything after!

its so much easier to clean install:

c:format c:
this will erase everything (y/n) y

sit back and let it all erase ( save your important files though)

then slap in the XP* disk and just follow the directions

* or substitute with mandrake 9.1 cd :P

Not to worry, tak, there will be no Linux on this machine!

wldkos, installing an upgrade works a little different than a stand alone edition. It has to have something on here to upgrade from. When it recognizes that there is another Windows OS on here it will format and install the upgrade. That's why I need the 98 CD. :)

That's not true, you can install from an upgrade disk on a blank formatted HD with no OS installed.

Put the upgrade disk in and at some point during the installation it will ask for proof of ownership of an earlier OS. That is the reason you need the 98CD, for proof of ownership.

Why would you blank format the drive when the upgrade OS will do it for you? I went to the trouble to get the 98 CD and was never ask for it. :)

I didn't say that you had to blank format a drive, I said that you can install on a blank drive from an upgrade CD if you have the 98 CD as proof of ownership.

Wine. :)

That's what I'll do once I can afford to build myself a Linux server. At least I'll try, maybe it does not work.
