This frecken sucks. I was getting "no rom basics" errors on my "new" pentium server and it turns out it's my 10 gig that's finished. That really sucks.
I hooked up one of my too many "less than 100MB" hard drives to it and it booted fine (then windows crashed, but that's normal). So it is in deed my 10GB hard drive. This really sucks since now I'm screwed as for building a server. No use in buying a hard drive. Too much trouble and quite expensive. The reason it's too much trouble is because just about ever expense that requires ordering goes through my parants some how and it's this big thing. "why do you need that what will you use it for you just want to waste money" blah blah.
Oh well, no network upgrade for me. Just had to vent, this is a total piss off that things can just fail for no reason. It worked before that just fine.
Oh well, as a positive note, I can maybe put up an article on my site on "Beating up your hard drive" or something. My dremel comes to mind. Revenge. muhahahahahaha

Red, why would you need a server?
A server is something I want as soon as I get that ultra-fast business fibre line. (Years and years ahead if ever...) Everyone would have to help me out, of course!
Maybe you should cut some of the cover off and replace it with glass--making a window.

I want a local server so I can actually get to play with linux and learn about it, and I want to set it up as a local DNS server, make my internet access very fast. And when a site switches IP, I'll be the first one to be able to access it if I know the IP.
Also, it would be good for making articles on setting up a Linux server.
Oh well. I really want to consider selling computer parts off my site so I'll get hooked up with a few vendors and let people know I sell parts. I'll only do it locally though. Too complicated over the internet (different tax laws etc), maybe later.

Your 10GB probably suffered the same fate as my 10GB when we used to run the IceTeks Server. Heat Damage and subsequent failure of the disk drive, though I have to say, I had bigger problems than a prospective server drive dying, I lent that 10GB out to a buddy, we placed it in a well-cooled case, and when it died it took about 8GB of data that he had written, drawn, downloaded ect.. and basically destroyed it before he had a chance to get a backup. How's that for painful?

oops just could not help it i had to say that line.
but to ask for real is what i am doing
i need to know what your troubles were like or rather symptoms of the hard drive over heating.
what does that do to the mouse the screen and other system hardware and software.
i never had a hd get too hot. i have had them be bad when i tried to install them but not go bad because of over heating ?
i need to have step by step documentation of what it is like so i can see if i have the same thing starting to happen to me.
thanks

I did not have data on it (just the old IceTeks server stuff, such as the outdated PC411 database, I don't even think there was IceTeks on there, but PC411 so at least I did not loose any data. There was a bit of "trials" but that's about it.
